New Addition/Intro/ID

Hello all,

I wasn't sure exactly where to post this thread as It's kind of a multiple subject deal. I wanted to introduce myself and share a few pics (hopefully I do this right) of the new addition to our family.

Unfortunately, I've had a few opinions on what exactly I have. I tried doing some research as far as BCC and BCI, Localities etc. but just ended up getting further confused... I have experience with Ball pythons/King snakes so not my first rodeo but this is my first Boa Constrictor and I want to be responsible enough to know exactly what I have, so I can do specific research on it and branch out from there.

I purchased him from Petco as a "Red Tail Boa". I wouldn't normally purchase a reptile from petco/petsmart (completely different discussion) but I just fell in love and wanted to give him a good home. I would greatly appreciate any assistance with this ID. Thanks in advance...

Re: New Addition/Intro/ID

BCI influenced for sure. Whether or not it has other boa constrictors in its genes is another story, you can only know with papers. As far as visually, it looks 100% Colombian BCI to me.

Pet stores like Petsmart love to label all boa constrictors as "red tail boas" to justify jacking up their prices as much as 3x the snake's value, which leads to a lot of confusion. "Red tail" is only a colloquial term, and although generally accepted to refer to BCC, it's still a loosely-applied term.

It's much more accurate to refer to them as boa constrictors, and if you know what they are refer to them as their respective subspecies or locality.

Re: New Addition/Intro/ID

Thank you both very much for the info! It's greatly appreciated. I still need to confirm if it's M/F, I don't like to bother them at all for at least 5 days while they are adjusting to their enclosure. I look forward to doing some more research and thank you all in advance for this community!
