Hookworm result for my albig...

I just got the stool results back and it seems that my Varanus albigularis has a type of hookworm. That is all the technicion could tell me untill the vet gets in on Monday.
(As it is a W/C I cannot say I'm surprised)

Needles to say I have a couple of questions such as:

* What should I expect as a treatment?

* Is this hookworm able to use humans as a host?

* Any further info would be great

The hookworms are easy to treat, you wont have a problem

If you wash your hands after you handle the monitor you dont have to worry about getting them Bri.

I am sure you understand when I say "I Think I washed my Hands"...I most likley did wash them as I always do even between handling different herps, however to say that I am 100% positive I cant say that.

So what's next just wait and see, get a stool sample for myself,
or just hold on for a while and with any luck loose a few pounds

BTW Hows your guy doin' I hope well

LOL!!! Bri i havent heard of to many people contracting them from their herps, i think you would have to have handled some feces and then had your hands in your mouth to really be worried

My little guy has great body weight but his tail is really thin.... I am away untill sunday now so i hope the time alone will help him out... I left him with alot of water bowls, he ate this morning a few crix and i left 3 - 5 in there for him... So maybe the no stress will be good for him!

I hate to be the bringer of bad news but, you can get hookworm by having your skin come into contact with the larvae...
I got this info from the CDC site on parasites (here ): Hookworms have a complex life cycle that begins and ends in the small intestine. Hookworm eggs require warm, moist, shaded soil to hatch into larvae. These barely visible larvae penetrate the skin (often through bare feet), are carried to the lungs, go through the respiratory tract to the mouth, are swallowed, and eventually reach the small intestine. This journey takes about a week. In the small intestine, the larvae develop into half-inch-long worms, attach themselves to the intestinal wall, and suck blood. The adult worms produce thousands of eggs. These eggs are passed in the feces (stool). If the eggs contaminate soil and conditions are right, they will hatch, molt, and develop into infective larvae again after 5 to 10 days.

So, it'd be best to take some extra precautions...

Brian since you got the positive fecal the vet is going to give you a wormer to give to the monitor, since its eating mice i am assuming you would just put the right ammount into the mouse and feed it. It shouldnt cost you more then $15.00 for the treatment.
