I've seen a FEW leopard geckos at Petsmart.....they looked fine....

but checking out their fishtanks, often some are dead or sluggish....and they've got those little Bettas in tiny plastic cups...that bugs me, but I'm not badmouthing Petsmart because I do get everything there...and their animals are relatively healthy

I'm going to defend the betta situation here.Betta's do not need a lot of room cause they do not move much and they sell amazingly well so there placed in small cups til there sold with a bigger encolsure. If you think those small cups are bad you should see what they are transported in.

Answer to Q#1 You have to keep in mind that stores will be stores, you cannot quarantine and sick animals will get in from time to time (though some more than others). However some stores are able to control this much better than others. General pet stores (both private and chain stores) are quite frightening in the reptile department, I have yet to encounter one that was even halfway acceptable. Reptile specialty stores are definitely a step up, but still many aren't that far off from how their animals are kept, etc.

Answer to Q#2 I don't want this to come across as being biased because I work there, but rather more of an insiders opinion. Kris' Reptiles is definitely one of the best stores I've been in. Doesn't even smell like a store, smells like flowers most of the time The animals are cared for, their needs are put first and foremost, if an animal needs veterinary care, that's what it gets. They are well fed, water bowls are kept clean and filled (several times daily for the ones that like to make us work ), and cages are spot cleaned daily and fully cleaned as needed. Snakes are provided with feed and shed records. And if we don't feel you are capable of caring for the animal properly, or you don't have the necessary experience for the animal, we have no problem refusing a sale

This is not a good comparision but reptile store are kind of like gas station. Some are really well kept and others I hate to even walk into it. I live in Phoenix, AZ and we have two stores that sell nothing but reptiles and they keep them in very good conditions and the cages are very clean. But there are also several store that reptiles are just secondary and they are not keep very well.
