Guitar/Mic questions...

Hey, I got a guitar a while ago, and I have been playin, and now, I need a mic. So, I have a few hardware q's about mics...

Can they be plugged into the regular input jack of my amp (2 input jacks)?

If yes, if it is in the same amp as my guitar, while playing heavily distorted, would that screw up the mic?

Should I buy a seperate amp for my mic?

Does it need a special jack or other stuff?

Any other info that would help a moron? Lol!

You can plug the mic into a regular amplifier. Problem is, if you guitar is distored so will ur voice. So it's better to use a different amp then the one u use for your guitar.

The mic needs a special cord. At one end is the regular jack that plugs into the amplifier and at the other end is a circular jack that plugs into a mic (and if i remember correctly mic jacks are fairly expensive)

Get a good, name brand mic. They are like guitars, if you get an Epiphone Les Paul Special II it's not gonna sound like a Gibson Les Paul original. You will hear, and feel the difference.

Ok, here's what I would do....

1. Get a Shure SM 57. They run about $120 and are the best all-round bang for your buck. You can use them to mic voice (Sting did his entire last album's vocals on one), snare drums, guitar amps, piano... pretty much anything live or in the studio.

2. You WILL be dissapointed with the sound you get running your mic through a guitar amp. But, if you are running your guitar through pedals to get your effects and not using the overdrive on the amp, it won't be "as bad". That being said, you'd need to fork out at least a few hundred bucks for a PA and speakers to get your mic to sound much better.

One more thing, you can run as much dirt on your voice as you want and it would never ruin your mic. Your mic just picks ap the sound waves and carries them to your amp. Nothing travels back into the mic.

What is your budget? What is your aim/ how loud or clean do you want your sound to be? What equipment do you already have? Where will you be playing with your gear?

Oh yeah, the cable you'd want to go guitar - amp is an XLR to a 1/4" cable. A 20' cable would be about 30 bucks...

Well... We are just gettin started out.... we have been jamming together occasionally, for about two months now... We will be playing good old punk rock, I want to be able to distinguish my words, but, since its punk rock, it doesn't need to be all that clean

We want it to be quite loud, but we wont be playin gigs for at least a year-two years...

We are playin on little Peavy's (158 rage, its like a foot squared, and eight inches "thick") and some even small amps, just getting the sound going, but we will be moving up to some bigger amps in the next year or so....
I make about $100 a month for band stuff.

We are looking at the middle of the line stuff, we saw some mics for $25 each, up to like $250, but we are looking to get set up with a mic adn everything for under $300, if possible.
