New Niska pictures - Tricolor Hognose

Took some new pictures of Niska today, he did not want to sit still! He shed fairly recently and is nice and shiny. Unfortunately I have a hard time catching all of his colors well, his "white" bands are actually a lemon yellow color but are almost always washed out to white in my pictures.

Re: New Niska pictures - Tricolor Hognose

Thanks! I'm really hoping he doesn't melanistic out to a bicolor, a lot of them lose all of their reds and a lot of the whites as they age. He has gotten a lot of black overtaking his reds but I am hoping this will be about as black as he goes! Doesn't seem to be very predictable as to which ones will go bicolor.

Re: New Niska pictures - Tricolor Hognose

Very pretty Hognose. I love the look of their face with the upturned nose. It's interesting how some snakes change their colors to mainly black as the age similar to a MB. There has to be some benefit for them to do this in the wild. Perhaps as they grow into adulthood, they no longer need to mimic the coloration of venomous coral snakes for protection and the black coloration is more beneficial for laying in ambush for prey. Very pretty snake, thanks for sharing the photos.
