why I will be going digital for christmas

this is exactly why I'm getting new digital thermometers and hydrometers for christmas. My mbk's sclaes started to look dry but my hydrometer said it humidity was a 50 percent. I didnt think it was right, so I started to mist it. then, today, I had the wonderful idea of seeing how "good" these hydrometers were. I left these in my tank for an hour. Now im unsure. And well, I'm definitely going digital.

Yes! I had the same gauges you did &
I knew they were off because my brb had perfect sheds at 50% humidity? No not possible
unless the gauges were off & they were once
I got the Zilla digital one.. Works very well..
& cheaper! I suggest it

Re: why I will be going digital for christmas

look up hygrometer salt calibration - this should be done regularly on all hygrometers, and will tell you how far off your hygrometer is

Reptile branded hygrometers are significantly more expensive, than others which contain exactly the same technology - i'm not saying they arnt good, just that adding reptile to the name, means they believe can charge more.

A hygrometer which can be calibrated, is likley to have a better probe/sensor and last longer (in terms of accuracy degradation over time)

Re: why I will be going digital for christmas

Drum when you get these, I would suggest to do what Formica said. I did this also, found out for my brb why I was getting such a difference as well only to find out that one if my hygrometers were only reading 78% of the actual humidity. If you don't know the math for it, say your hygrometer reads 80% in the bag of salt. Then you would do 80/75 x 100 = 106% of actual

Re: why I will be going digital for christmas

Digital doesn't mean it will be more accurate. It is the sensing device that relays the information - whether it be by a meter gauge or LCD display. I have owned both and it was the "digital" one that was inaccurate

it is true that a digital thermometer can be inaccurate, electronics are just as susceptible to damage or errors during manufacture as anything else on this planet.

other than that, your comment is not actually helpful, because most of the time, a digital thermometer, will be more accurate than a dial thermometer, pretty much every single time.

the only thermometers which are consistently more accurate than digital, even cheap digital, is mercury

Re: why I will be going digital for christmas

For people with multiple enclosures anf shallow pockets you can try this...Buy one really good, accurate hygrometer and buy 1of those cheap dial jobs for each enclosure. Put the cheap dial gauge inside the enclosures. One at a time over the course of a full day, adjust the humidity in the viv to what is required for the snake inside. Use a dot of whiteout on the cheap gauge and mark it. Remove the expensive hygrometer and move on to the next cage and repeat. Now even if the number is not accurate you will still be able to notice a change up or down in each tank. If one concerns you and is off, place the expensive unit in and take a reading. Then adjust as necessary. Those cheap little dial jobs are not accurate but are still useful and better than nothing if used as I described.

Good idea, thanks!
