Found a snake while hiking.

Unfortunately I don't have a picture. I can only describe it.

I'm just curious what it could have been.

It was very tiny. Probably about 5 to 7 inches long. Its body was red and it had a yellow ring around its neck. It looked very similar to a Ring Neck snake, but it had a bright red body.
I'm located in the midlands of South Carolina.

While walking in a state nature park it went across the path... The two people who came in behind us with a dog attempted to stomp on the little snake, but luckily they missed and moved on since we approached it. The little thing was uninjured and moved on safely.

Yes the whole body was red. It looked like a ring neck snake exactly, but the body was red and not dark/black colored.

Re: Found a snake while hiking.

There is a snake in central and south america that looks a little like that. I'm trying to remember the name. It's like Celia or something it's rear fanged and eats other snakes. I'm not sure if they are legal in the US, if so maybe what you saw was an escaped hatchling. A friend of mine from Costa Rica was showing me pictures of them a few years ago. I only remember because it reminded me of the Ring Neck. I'm sure some one here will know what I'm talking about. If I can remember the correct name I'll post.

Yes that's it!! Clelia! Beautiful snakes. Are they legal to own? I've never seen one, only the picture my friend had.
