plz identify this reptile.
In our area this reptile known by name 'chanan geera' and people think it has maximum venom, even more than cobra snake. today this reptile came to our neighbours house and they killed them, i clicked picture. please help me to identify this, i want to gather information from internet about this.

It is a monitor lizard, but I'm not sure on species. Certainly NOT venomous at all, but they do have teeth and claws, which could inflict some painful but non-life threatening injuries.

Bengal monitor is my guess, hard to tell though. Either way you'd most likely have a hard time getting injured by it unless that was actually your goal. He probably wants to stay just as far away from you as you do to it.
They aren't venomous/poisonous and I would go so far as to say, unless you back it into a corner or try to pick it up, they are completely harmless.
Also from the picture, it looks to be a juvenile....no where near adult size. How long was it? 35 cm? Don't think any lizards in india are venomous either..

Thanks for your quick reply.. Now, i can try to make people understand about this reptile, may be it can save some lifes in future. It was approximately 20 c.m. long and people was talking it is kid.

While no monitors are poisonous, I do recall Steve "the crocodile hunter" climing a tree to get away from one. He went on to say that untreated bites were usually deadly due to viral infection. This wasn't in India, though. Maybe someone can clarify.

Steve Irwin climbed a tree to escape a Komodo dragon. Their bites contain very high concentrations of bacteria that I believe can rapidly cause infection and even sepsis which is what leads to death.

Dr bryan fry actually proved that komodo's do have venom glands. Though they don't have fangs like gilla monsters. I believe with the komodo the toxics are mixed in with the saliva.

yep...no fangs..."inefficient" venom delivery system (compared to an elapid or viperid)...venom introduced by a chewing action and capillary action into the
"chewed wound"...
