Snake ID: North Florida, black colored

Probably just a black snake, but want to make sure. I'm in Gainesville, FL, which is north Florida. It's living under the steps to the house, probably is able to get underneath the house I would imagine. What do you think it is? I've attached a low quality image, and here is the link to the high quality image: https://goo.gl/photos/zBgiEdsagnZUzgFk7

Re: Snake ID: North Florida, black colored

It is a Southern Black Racer (Coluber constrictor priapus), harmless. Black snake is just a colloquial name for just about any snake found in the eastern US that happens to be black. It is most often applied to Black Racers, "Black" Rat Snakes, and Eastern Coachwhips.

Racers eat a lot of rodents and even other snakes, including venomous snakes. Pretty cool critters. Nice find, thanks for sharing.
