I guess it works for their purpose of clearing snow and ice but they havent thought further down the line.

Imagine coming off a bike and getting gravel rash with antifreeze mixed in apart from the poor animals both sild and domesticated that will be affected

Re: Dog owners BEWARE!!

Some places use a different type of anti freeze that is not as harmful as regular car anti freeze. Not to say it is good but it won't really do much harm. They don't use anything like that in my state though.... not yet anyways.

It's illegal to do that here, but still, in winter anti-freeze is EVERYWHERE! The dangerous part is that because its smell mimics natural sources of food, dogs are attracted to it.

Almost. The main ingredient in antifreeze is ethylene glycol, essentially an odourless, sugary alcohol. So dogs go for it because of the same reason kids do, it tastes sweet.

Not true. Antifreeze smells sweet. It's been said that it smells similar to the pheramones that bees give off which makes the animal think that it's natural honey, though I can't find a link. I heard that information on, of all things, Monster Quest.

Re: Dog owners BEWARE!!

It's a common misconception that since it tastes sweet it must also smell sweet; funny that the HS got it wrong. Ethylene glycol is absolutely odorless though.

Re: Dog owners BEWARE!!

ANTIFREEZE as a whole is not odorless. I just smelled the stuff in my garage. I can definitely smell it, though it isn't strong.

Dogs can smell carbon monoxide- and "odorless" gas.
Dogs can smell cancer cells.
Dogs can smell a single flake of cocaine in a suitcase.
Dogs can smell neurological changes in the brain.
Dogs can smell a trail a week old across different terrain from a lost human.

So talk to me again about dogs not being able to smell something because it is odorless. That's funny.

This may be wrong but i asked a mechanic friend and he said they add a smell to antifreeze as a "warning" for humans so that "idiots" dont drink it.
