Blue Tongue Skink

I have decided after I build my enclosure for my Savannah Monitor I want to use his old setup for a Blue Tongue Skink. I have read a few care sheets and the care page on BlueTongueSkinks.net

I always like to check here first to make sure what I read is correct because there is so much false information around and I know there are people here who have raised them.

The enclosure I will have available is a 4'x18''x18'' it is a screen top. I want to know what kind of substrate, lights, temperatures and what kind of food owners feed their Blue Tongues.

Also is this site legit to order from?

The info on the caresheets from BlueTongueSkinks.net is pretty solid mate. It's a great forum much like this one with very knowledgeable keeprs on there. I'd trust their care sheet.

The enclosure size you have would be fine... I keep a shingleback skink which is a species of bluetoungue but is has specific care that varies from the rest of the Tiliquas.

I don't know the specific care for the other species but generally a basking spot of 32C, substrate can be species specific I use paper kitty litre on mine but shinglebacks need very low humidity levels so I need a substrate that sucks up the moisture out of the air. It's the only way I have found that gives me a 20-30% humidity level as shinglebacks are prome to RI in captivity (may be different to other tiliqua species). UVB needs is debatable some people use them some don't (I don't for my set up but I feed vertebrae prey from time to time for calcium). Apart from that snails are a good source of protein for all species of BTS and the rest nice veggies. I'm not sure of the other species of BTS are fast enoughto catch crickets... shinglebacks are definitely not.

Re: Blue Tongue Skink

Blue-tongued skinks are one of the most durable "bulletproof" lizards one can keep. Very forgiving captives, little opportunistic omnivorous garbage pails that eat nearly anything, and relatively docile. Most certainly, if you go by half of what BlueTongueSkinks.net tells you, you and your skink will be just fine.

When I had mine, I kept them on about 3" of aspen shavings. Basking spot was usually around 100-110'F, and the low end was in the low 80s.

I never provided any UV lighting for mine, and they did great. I never even took them outside. I think most of my success on that front was due to a very well-rounded and balanced diet, of which I routinely supplemented with vitamins.

This is "Baby Sinclair" the last BTS we had. This is him at nearly 2 yrs...I had him since he was 1 month old and he never had a ray of UV light while in my possession.

I love them, and can easily see myself owning one again in the near future.

As far as Backwater Reptiles goes, I personally have never heard of them. Someone else I knew recently asked about them, and according to a quick BOI search, they don't have a stellar reputation. In fact, another vendor I know whom I consider a "bad dealer" did not recommend them...if that says anything.

Re: Blue Tongue Skink

I have an older BT that I got about 10-11 years ago. The vet at the time figured him to be at least 5 years old so now he's somewhere around 15. At the time he was on a horrid diet of cat food and red grapes. He still to this day refuses all live foods. His current diet consist of a variety of greens, veggies, fruit and organic baby food chicken. I also use some baby food veggies and fruits for him. He has never gotten on a consistent feeding schedule. I find that he actually eats about 2-3 times per week. I offer veggies and greens daily, meat three times per week and fruit twice per week.
I've used a few different types of substrate for him including aspen, coconut bark, alf pellets and reptile mulch. He seems to like the coconut bark the best, easy to move around under the surface. My favorite for ease is the alf pellets but the coconut bark isn't bad. It's absorbant and easy to clean as needed. I've not had any issues with mold with it. He's in a 4' by 3' by 2' glass enclosure. I use a UVB light 12 hours per day and an under the tank heater in the winter.
I put a large dried piece of maple log in there and it's kept his nails in check. I've never had to trim them. A 10" X 3" ceramic dog bowl is used for water. He likes to bathe and burrow under his bowls so this prevents dumping the water in the substrate.
He's been a joy over the years.
