Mini freezer?

Hey guys, whatup.

As some of you will know I'll soon be getting my first BP. One thing bothers me though... the wife doesn't want mice/rats in the house. Even frozen ones.

I don't really want to have to trek down to petco every time I want to buy a frozen rat so I'm looking at what my other options are...

Is there such thing as a mini freezer or cheap micro freezer I can stick in the garage out of the way?

I don't want to spend more than $100 ideally... recommendations??

Re: Such thing as a micro/mini freezer?

i bought the smallest house freezer i could find, its around.....

two and a half feet high

two feet from side to side

two feet from front to back

it opens at the top

i have a few carpet pythons that take large rats,i put 4 to 6 months prey in at a time and it fits fine

i have the freezer tucked away,in a small cuboard under the stairs

cheers shaun

Yeah, just keep your eye out for classifieds (Craigslist, etc.). Might be able to snag one for cheap. Its how I got my snake food freezer for $75.

Re: Mini freezer?

I started off with a small freezer I found for sale for $50 and a month ago bought a huge upright one. But I have animals that I'll soon be switching to rabbits....about 5 total. So I needed something bigger.

A small freezer still holds a ton of rats and mice with no problems.

Re: Mini freezer?

I got a good size deep freeze/chest freezer on craigslist for 100 dollars. I would look there. Other than that amazon can produce small freezers not sure on the price though.

Re: Mini freezer?

I found a small chest freezer online. Its rated as medical grade quality. Keeps things in deep freeze at about minus 30 f. Was about 200 bucks. Dunno if its worth it if you only have one snake though. It works well for me. Has two shelfs and can pack up an easy 100 rats if I need to store for a while. I breed my own rats and I have to stock up for summer since they stop breeding when it gets too warm so a three to six month supply for me fits nicely.

Re: Mini freezer?

You guys have dead cow thigh and chicken breast in the freezer right? Tell her rats are no different. Just a different kind of meat, that you guys don't have to eat. Keep it in a black bag or something else that could hide it visually.

I had this issue with my mom at first. Now we have them in a clear ziplock bag right next to the ice cream and frozen veggies.

Re: Mini freezer?

Just figured I would check back in. Not sure where in Alaska you are but there are freezers available on craigslist for under $100. If you haven't figured things out yet that is...

Re: Mini freezer?

Think what I'm going to do is buy just 1 or 2 at a time from the store, on an "as needed" basis. As much as a pain as that sounds, it's the only thing I can think to do at the moment.

BP's arriving in 6 days...

Over the winter however, Alaska is cold enough for me to put a few frozen rats outside in a bag. They'll stay frozen for several weeks, Nov thru Feb!

Re: Mini freezer?

This always puzzled me when I had snakes. If people had a problem with me keeping frozen mice in my freezer, I'd think....but it's ok to keep frozen pig, cow, chicken, etc. in yours??

Re: Mini freezer?

I prefer to keep my rats/mice in a mini freezer/deep freezer. I can keep them longer seeing as the freezer isn't opened on a daily basis. I have no issue keeping them frozen for a year in sealed bags. If I have to keep them in my normal freezer I think 3-4 months is the max time I would keep them.
