I Never Thought This Would Ever Happen!....
Honestly, I never thought that I would ever get a Tarantula, or any kind of arachnid for that matter. But I think it was a great step going through a slight paranoia of spiders. I never did like them on me, although I could always handle them being in the room and around me etc.
Anyways, meet (Name undecided ) an un-sexed G. Rosea (Chilean Rose Haired Tarantula). (S)he is fairly young still, just measuring around 1 inch, got him/her at the Abbotsford Reptile Expo last weekend! Needless to say, (s)he is awesome and super tame! No biting or hair flicking so far.
Any information I should know is always helpful, and thanks for looking!

I did the same thing. Got one because they creeped me out lol. Now I have 2, I don't handle them at all but I love looking at them. Going to get more too!
Congrats on your new addition

I was surprised at the fact that they seem pretty docile, although I still wonder if it would randomly bite me or not...a little paranoia there. I take him/her out fairly often, and it doesn't seem to mind. Ahh, sounds like another addiction besides snakes haha.
Thanks!

I have a rose hair that was almost dumped at the pet store, and i took her home...she is THE sweetest spider...almost the sweetest animal i have. So easy going, docile, etc. You will do great! It will be easier, i think, when it's bigger, too. They're more fun to hold...more solid.
Cute!

Awe, well it's great that you were there to get her! I'm excited for him/her to get bigger as well It's weird to say but my fear has slowly faded each time I handle him/her.

Re: I Never Thought This Would Ever Happen!....
Pretty!
I want to get a T bad to help break my phobia of spiders (that's how I got into keeping snakes...I bought one to break my fear). The only thing that stops me is that aren't animals you can interact with as much as I'd like. I love having animals I can interact with. Plus, I don't see how just constantly looking at one and taking care of it would break my fear.
Congrats on the pick up though. I think they're one of the prettier T's.

I was wondering if it was a good idea or not but my boyfriend proceeded to change my mind and we bought him/her on the spot. I'm glad I did as I am more comfortable! (S)he's super friendly and tame too! I take him/her out every day, not for a long duration but just to get him/her used to my presence, and plus the person I got him/her from seemed to have a lot of experience and handled them a fair amount.

They are cute when they're little. I had one years ago for the same reason. Eventually I came to love him as much as my reptiles. Fun to watch them hunt!

I always wondered what it would be like keeping tarantulas and scorpions. Maybe someday, we'll see.

Congrats on your new hairy friend.
Out of curiosity, how do you pick it up? Do you grab it? push it on to your hand? I'm not a spider person so bear with me here

Re: I Never Thought This Would Ever Happen!....
She's really cute! I never had a G.Rosea as a baby, it's weird to see how different they look. I have two adult g.roseas, my female is a bit jumpy and I haven't gotten the chance to handle her because she'll do an angry pose at every movement she sees..but my male is so sweet and walks all over me. As long as you don't do quick movements, and don't force him/her out of the tank when she's pissy, you'll be fine I'm sure.

Awe, thanks! I've seen G. Rosea's as adults but never as a baby before either, so I was surprised when I was told. Is there a certain way you can tell their gender at a young age at all? Apparently you don't know until later, or just guessing...but it would be great to know. (S)he seems quite docile and friendly so far

I know this website really helps to know what you're looking for. American Tarantula Society Discussion Board • View topic - Sexing a tarantula It's always better and easier to sexe them when they are about 2 inches in legspan though. If you have a good microscope though and know what you're looking for, you can most likely sexe him/her now.
