My first hognose shed..pics!

Took forever. I was worried for a while because he got sooo pouty, and just sat there being miserable. My poor boy hates to shed! But what a shed....creepiest one i've seen, but i love it! Would have kept it if he hadn't spit stinky snake spit all over the head *lol*

Yay Copper!

Also as a bonus, my baby baby boy, Perry, ate his first pinky! Little jerk wouldn't take it out of his habitat, but I was just so glad he was eating! He's a little hisser.

I bet your hognose is your favorite of all your snakes. I love all my snakes, but out of the 28, I think my little hognose (Miss Piggy) is becoming my favorite.

Oh HO Good eye! I saw him in the store and he was Sooo green! I was like GOTTA have'em! I have seen outrageous prices online for green phase hognose. He was only $90 bucks!

ANd really? I have no idea *lmao* i have been trying to get him to eat for weeks. Finally I decided i had to try in the enclosure, where he felt safe. He showed interest...i kept it up, and just kept the pinky warm, and acted like it was crawling away from him, and kind of pushing the substrate towards him a little (my "hard to feed" snake routine...tease!!) he finally couldn't stand it. He did PUSH it twice with his nose, and finally, FINALLY opened up and gobbled it down. I tried again once after that, and he didn't want it. I tried again another day, and he showed interest....but the pinky popped (my fault) and he freaked out and hissed at the smell. I got a little on his tongue when he flicked out and he puffed right up and hissed *lmao* Must have been nasty!

So, I'm due to try again actually, and this time i was going to brain the pinky. He's going to have to wait until Saturday an we get back from the Pamona, CA reptile show with some grub!

ANyway, i thought he was a good steal. Such a troublesome lad though. Copper, the bigger hog we actually paid a LOT for, for a normal hognose...but we found a great shop owner who had sold us our really awesome first ball python, so we were willing to pay that little extra to get the "pet" quality hognose who was already eating and being nice! And he is! Copper is a sweetheart who actually eats (most of the time) without a fuss...so was totally worth the price.

So yeah, i saw his color and bought...only thinking later what a pain in the butt it will be to get the little thing to eat *lol*

I am paranoid about the substrate getting ingested, so feeding in the enclosure was a big deal to me. I dried that pinky off reeeeeally well so nothing would stick to it *lol*

Oh and previous to this i tried scenting with fish, salmon, uhmm...rubbing it on my dragon skink *lmao*
For him it didn't seem to be about scent, so much as something moving juuust the right way.
Good luck, and really! They are such picky little brats sometimes! Let me know how it goes!

Re: My first hognose shed..pics!

Yeah I have rubbed pinkies f/t and alive on our white lipped tree frogs, much to there disapproval lol. I am considering getting a pinky pump and forcing this turd to eat. He took meds way back very well in a syringe.

To bad we both have male green phases. I'd love a friend with a green phase to share some eggs with providing mine decides to start eating and growing. Our normal western female is a "pig" and will eat anything and doesn't even hiss. She used to be smaller than the male but its revered now.

Re: My first hognose shed..pics!

Ha i was so silly i looked up hognose before i got them, and knew they could be sexed. But for some reason that went out of my head when i got my first, and i thought he was a girl. So, when i found the green boy i was like, SCORE! But they are both boys *lol*

It would be cool to do something with someone and breed the greens, that's for sure. Too bad! lol

I'm a total worry wart. I was right to that point, with him, with the pinky pump. I was going to try to find live pinkies first, since i think that's what the petstore had fed him. I'm going to try him again tomorrow. Brained and wiggling, i might get him to try again.
I noticed that he did seem to do better when i left him in his cage. I opened the lid, and poked around a bit, every day, and then when i put the food in, only got near him with the food. That seemed to help. Little jerk thinks he's a wild snake.
He has hissed tons of times, and flares. He's never played dead though. He's ornery and would rather his and bump.
Copper played dead the very first day i brought him home....the dog ran up *rolls eyes* my fault...wasn't as dramatic as all that, but he saw the movement and freaked, hissed, flared, and flopped over, adding just a little musk onto the carpet to teach me. lol He's never even made a flare since. He ate, and ate when i first got him. He went on strike for a month, then ate and ate again...and is currently on strike again.

Perry, the green, never did actually look thin, or like he'd even lost weight since i got him. He ate, and then NOW looks a little thin...but i'm guessing that's because he got fat with pinky and then pooped it out...lol

That's funny that you tried rubbing it on your frogs *LOL* Does he look thin at all? Do you know if he's drinking? How about sitting on the hot end, and metabolizing? Perry has decided to wiggle in his water bowl until he gets ALL the water out, and then he's been sitting in there. HIs tank isn't too hot, he's just being a jerk *lol* I notice that he likes to wiggle and make paths in the substrate though. He's settled in on the cool side and I think has decided to go on strike again.
