Breeding Plans

Here are my breeding plans for the next three years, looking for some input from anyone who's bred before in the past.

Right now I have a normal girl, shes kind of a rescue and I don't intend on doing any breeding with her.

I have reserved and purchased a Cinny Male already that I am going to pair with a Pastel female (that I will buy fairly soon) in the next two years, and Im trying for Pewters of course. So that will be my fairly cheap first experiment at breeding-kinda thing. So that I sort of get the hang of breeding.

I will also be investing in a Bumblebee in about year or (probaby) two and pairing it with a Lesser. I will be going for 1/8 chance for queen bee, as well as the other three double-gene morphs. Lesser pastels, Lesser bees, and Bumble bees.

Is this too agressive of a plan for my first few years of breeding? Money is also another issue but I think I will be able to save up enough before then.

My Ultimate Ultimate goal for this project is breeding a Queen Bee with a Pastel, and trying to create a Killer Queen Bee, a Lesser Plat Super Pastel, and a Lesser Plat Super Pastel Spider. I know the odds are 1/16 and quite unlikely; however, all of the outcomes from those combo's are so fantastic looking. I'm really excited to hear back and see what you guys think.

In terms of making your money back, I was told not to expect anything back for the first 3 years (not that im doing it for money, of course i am just blown away by bp morphs!). And that seems pretty accurate.

Re: Breeding Plans

Well as someone who thinks a lot about this and who's had a fairly successful first year then I believe you should just try to plan year by year. A lot can happen in three years. Snakes die randomly, and I know this from experience, or you can slug out in a year. A snake stops eating.

Just be cautious and take your time. Also just have fun with it!

Thanks Aaron,

I have a general budget worked out for all three years, and I also worked in about $500 a year as a buffer in case I need to pay for vet fees. Pretty much what youre saying is this, right? Plan everything that you can and know every single step of the process and where things can go wrong during this process. I have to admit Im still fairly new to this, I've read a whole bunch of breeding articles but I think I have yet to do more research.

As for your comment about snakes dying randomly. How often does this really happen? If husbandry is spot on and breeders are trustable, then is this really a common issue? I must admit, the thought of a breeder dying after such a big investment would really suck, but I guess thats all in the game of snakes. I would hope that under my care, no snake ever dies but I guess thats a bit unrealistic. I guess I just have to do my best and see what happens

I don't think it happens often, they dying, but it can happen. Just something to be aware of.

Anyway I don't visit the site often. Send me a PM and it e-mails me to let me know.

Yup I plan on buying the cinny male in a month and a pastel girl before this coming summer, so that I can start raising them. It'll probably take at least two years before the girl is anywhere near the proper weight anyways, as I intend to raise them as hatchlings. Finding an established breeder pastel female is also another option.

The bumble bee and the lesser I dont plan on purchasing for at least a year, but probably two (just because of money, really). I think by the time my snakes are ready for breeding, so will I, in terms of knowledge.

Re: Breeding Plans

From someone who has been breeding for a decade, you need to be aggressive with your plans DEPENDING on whether or not you decide to get into the business side of things. If you plan to breed for yourself, take your time and go at your own pace.

Yeah, I got similar advice on another forum I post on. I got rid of the reservation for the cinny male and decided to invest a little more to get a lesser female.

Heres a pic of her, getting her from Shane at Legend Boas

Question: Does the blushing on her back get more apparent as she grows up? Or will it stay dark like that?

Gorgeous little lesser! Congrats But I'm biased towards cinnys You could've made super cinnys! Those are awesome and sell at high prices. But this lesser is also a great addition to your breeding project Congrats

Thanks Alessia! Yeah that cinny I posted earlier last week is super cute and I wanted to have him so badly, but in terms of breeding it really didn't make sense for me to get a male. Next female I need is a super pastel
