What would YOU pair with a Lipstick Sunglow?
Hello everyone!
I would just like to get your opinions here. My husband and I plan on starting a breeding project in the future with our male Lipstick Sunglow. His parents are direct lipstick line sunglows from Tom Burke, so he is a possible Super - of course, only breeding will prove that out.
I have been offered a couple nice Arabesque females recently, from a source that I trust implicitly. I know that Arabesque is co-dominant, and that Arabesque x Normal will produce 50% Arabesques, 50% Normals. Arabesque Het. Albino x Sunglow would produce:
12.5% Arabesque Sunglow
12.5% Arabesque Albino
12.5% Hypo. Arabesque Het Albino
12.5% Arabesque Het. Albino
12.5 % Sunglow
12.5 % Albino
12.5 % DH Sunglow
12.5% Het. Albino
CHAD HORNE REPTILES: Specializing In Boa Morphs & Tortoises
The trouble is, the Arabesque females I have been offered have unknown hets, so here are the other possibilities:
If my sunglow is Not super hypo:Sunglow x Arabesque =
25% Normal, het albino
25% Hypo, het albino
25% arabesque, het albino
25% hypo arabesque het albino
If my sunglow IS super hypo:
50% Hypo, het albino
50% Hypo Arabesque, het albino..
Sunglow Arabesques are gorgeous boas - but I am unsure of how soon we could expect to produce those, and whether YOU would aim for that as a breeding project...or would you pair my boy with a different morph? I am very open to suggestions!
I am not new to boa husbandry, just genetics and breeding. I would greatly appreciate your opinions! We are in no rush to breed at all, just in the market for a nice female for future pairing with our beautiful boy.
Thank you for any and all of your input!
~Kat~

Re: What would YOU pair with a Lipstick Sunglow?
Arabesques are normally pretty expensive, so if you can get a few nice arabesque females for a reasonable price, it wouldn't be a bad way to go. If it's a good price, go for it. I myself am a huge fan of moonglows. You could get yourself a nice triple het moonglow male (hypo het albino het anery). With that you could make sunglows, sunglow het anery, hypo het anery, triple het moonglow, albino het anery, and I'm not sure the exact %.

Oh wow, that sounds like a very worthwhile pairing! Thank you, I hadn't considered moonglows. I do actually know a good breeder who prodices them as a matter of fact..
I may yet go for the Arabesques, but still shopping around - so we'll see. I actually would like to know what you think of these 3 females we are also considering. The first is a Hypo Jungle, the 2nd is a Hypo Jungle 66% het Albino, and the 3rd and 4th are Hypo Super Jungles 50% het Albino:

Stunning snakes. Regarding breeding its up to you, you need to like what you produce.

Re: What would YOU pair with a Lipstick Sunglow?
Stephan gave great advice for producing what you like most.
I'll only add that when you're playing with recessive genes like the albino I believe in paying the extra dollars to ensure either a 100% het or an actual albino mutation. I don't like playing with possible hets, especially now that getting a 100% hets isn't bank breaking and they are pretty readily available.

Thanks Stephan, that's a very good point! As much as I might like the look of a certain female, I have to focus on the genetics because for a breeding project, that is what matters most, of course.

Thank you Aaron, that is great advice! I will definitely look around for boas with 100% hets. I'm in no rush, so I don't mind waiting even until next breeding season to find "the one".

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the imput and advice!

Re: What would YOU pair with a Lipstick Sunglow?
Keep in mind that yours is sadly a male, and you need females to be full grown when it comes time to breeding, so unless you intend to buy a 2009-2010 female once you've decided (going to be expensive), or wait a few more years to get the breeding under way, it might be better to buy a female for now, and buy "the one" once you find her.

That's very good reasoning, and I actually was just thinking the same thing last night after logging off! You know what though? That 1st female was born August 2010 (older pic there), and the others July of this year - so yet another reason I am leaning towards her. Pairing her with Seidon, if he is not a super would result in:
1/8 Wildtype het. Kahl Albino
1/8 Jungle het. Kahl Albino
2/8 Salmon(Hypo) het. Kahl Albino
2/8 Jungle Salmon(Hypo) het. Kahl Albino
1/8 Super Salmon(Hypo) het. Kahl Albino
1/8 Jungle Super Salmon(Hypo) het. Kahl Albino
I DO love salmons, so having a good bunch of them would not be a terrible thing, especially with a couple supers and jungles in the mix. I don't know, I could just get an albino from the same breeder, for half the $$, same age, and get 1/2 albino, 1/2 sunglow...or an albino jungle for just a little less than the hypo jungle and get 1/4 albino, 1/4 albino jungle, 1/4 sunglow and 1/4 sunglow jungle...ahh the decisions lol.

If you flip a coin and it lands on the snake you didn't prefer, chances are you are going to say something along the lines of "Damn those odds, I'm going with snake X anyway".
