Hey guys
Just thought I'd throw out a hello and an intro!
I'm new to herping. I just got my first snake 3 days ago. He's (actually I don't know if it's a he or she) a Ball Python I've named Cyrus. I think he's about a year old but totally adorable. I've fed him once and he actually ate so I guess he's already feeling a bit comfy in his new home. He ate 2 F/T fuzzys. What a stud.
I think I'm hooked because I already want another snake... I'm thinking a King next Tuesday.

Re: Hey guys
Email a copy of that picture to motovet@gmail.com and I'll get it on the forum for you.
The gallery will not even let me in to look at it.

Re: Hey guys
Congrats on joining and your first pet! Keep in mind that pythons and kings are very different in personalities, pythons tend to be calmer (especially balls) and kings are much more active, and are not so amenable to handling. They just don't sit still very long. I think this is because kings are active hunters, cruising around looking for prey while balls are ambush predators, waiting for prey to come within reach. also most kings (please correct me if I'm wrong, someone) tend to be tense babies, prone to musking (read crapping and peeing) when stressed. Have fun with your new pet!

Re: Hey guys
kings are great snakes (i have 2 a cali king and a mexican black) the mexican black is definitely more flighty and the california king is very active. as i understand it mexian black tend to be more flighty in general but the will calm down enough to handle give time and patients. i like my kings but be careful as kings are cannibalistic and will eat other snakes as well

Re: Hey guys
Hiya and welcome. Getting reptiles is like getting tattoos - you totally addicted from the beginning. We got our first snake in april and now we have 6 snakes, 2 lizards and 2 red eyed tree frogs. They're something i can't imagine living without now.

Re: Hey guys
Thanks for the tips/info on the Kings. Now I'm not sure what I want to get because I REALLY like the looks of the GTP and the fact that they hang out on branches. I was thinking the King because it is more active and doesn't just sit there and cruises around its cage and stuff. What do you guys think about GTPs in the way of temperament and handling and such?
So many beautiful snakes to choose from, so little time

a carpet python will do the same thing regards hanging off branches and being fun to watch
they are a lot easier to keep.
gtp's can be damaged by handling them in the first year.
also the husbandry is a bit more complicated.
if mistakes are made with gtp's they tend to die on you.
carpets however are more forgiving if mistakes are made.they can also be handled from hatchlings with no adverse effects.
the smaller of the carpet pythons are around the 5 foot mark.
girth wise as thick as a coke can.
cheers shaun

Re: Hey guys
Our GTP arrived today so not exactly expereinced with them!!! We read A LOT of books/forums/research etc before committing to him. You need to be confident that you can keep the humidity right for them and keep their husbandry right.
they are VERY VERY VERY beautiful snakes tho!!
