He is quite aggressive :> I always wear gloves for unpredictable snakes, it has just become habit over the years.... I caught myself putting them on one morning for a leucistic texas rat that was about a foot long, lol.

He is a Malagasy Giant Hognose, which is a bit of a misnomer, as they are far from giant at full size rarely exceeding 6 feet :>

re gloves i do that as well mate.

re size imo id say 6ft is a big hoggy.im sure ive seen pic's of one on here.i think its feebo that has one.

Yeah they`re aggressive and also, you do know these guys are venomous don`t you? I`ll never be handling mine without welding gloves on. The handbook on these guys suggests to "Excercise caution" when dealing with them. As far as I know it`s on a par with Mangrove venom but I don`t intend finding out, I have no idea what would happen if my Malagassy or my Westerns bit me, or more to the point how the venom might interact with the morphine I have to take every day. He is a beauty !! As I say, stay in touch, I`ll be very interested to hear how you`re getting on with him and how he`s behaiving.......

I know they are to be treated cautiously, yes :> The debate rages on the toxicity, which is why we are prohibited here in having most species of hognose....this and the spectacled are the exceptions in my neck of the woods. So far he hides, but of course this is just day 2 :>

You aren`t allowed Western Hogs then? Yeeeah My Malagassy hides at all times. Now and again I`ll walk into the room and see him out of cover, he`ll keep perfectly still and the second I look away, he`s gone. I provide all the digging and hiding type things he needs so he is able to completely elude me if he wants to....... and he wants to. lol ;D

Since today is feeding day, last night I tried him on a thawed small rat... he hissed, and grumbled, and pushed it away with his body, so I set it on his hide. I figured he may take it overnight, so if he didn't eat it I would give it to one of the ratsnakes in the morning. Well, 5 minutes later it was gone... so he was hungry, he just didn't want _me_ to feed him :> So far he is quite the character.

One thing I find interesting, is that for a snake reputed to be commonly imported in the reptile trade, there is an appalling lack of information, and really of people even keeping them... I'm definitely open to hearing of any helpful places to look, I have read the basics but there is nothing for experiences.

Yeeeah I haven`t found anything at all about actually keeping them. Have a bit of a cruise of the venomous forums and you`ll see the odd one but really not much at all......

I've put it out on my facebook group that I would be interested in getting some info, and there are a bunch from different continents, those that keep 'hots' etc... hopefully get some kind of response... Oh, and joined a few hognose forums too...
