Looking for pet snake
Looking for pet snake. I started out by looking for a cornsnake, but after many weeks of searching, I've decided that'll I'll accept anything as long as it's healthy and cheaper than 50$. I know, I know, 50$ for a snake isn't much, but I once bought a gecko for 100$ and it died of parasites the vet said it had probably had since the time I bought him. I live in Fredericton, N.B. and can drive to Halifax, St. John, and Moncton to pick up an animal. Toronto is doable, but it'll have to wait for this summer. You can contact me @ leezusriced@hotmail.com

Re: Looking for pet snake
I recommend just researching a snake that you like the look of! The best kept animals are the ones that you like the most. People can make suggestions and you take their suggestion because "It's a good place to start" then it might not be exactly what you want.

Re: Looking for pet snake
Plus do you mean $50 for JUST the snake or $50 for everything? Generally good cheaper beginner snakes would be Antaresia pythons and cornsnakes in my opinion. You could also go for a garter or ribbon snake as they are generally quite affordable and easy to set up.
Personally, I don't worry about cost too much. I just dished out $400 on everything I wanted to do with my new Hognose plus buying a lot of frozen rats.

Re: Looking for pet snake
Buddys here in Canada. Shipping will be $70 CDN at the cheapest & as much as $120+ your only option to spend $50 is a cornsnake or maybe a California Kingsnake & you would have to buy locally & would sill be looking at $40-$50 just for the snake itself. Driving to PU the snake will cost you time & gas. There are cornsnake breeders etc. in NB your best bet would be to try contacting them. To come right out & dis ya "like I want a snake, but it has to be the cheapest one I can get" folks that come across like that are usually not worthy of a snake as thye are not willing to spend what it costs to properly care for one. I'm glad one of us said it. I was actually trying to think of a tactful way to say that. Basically if you want a cheap and easy pet, get a betta LOL

Re: Looking for pet snake
Amen to that, I used to work at PetSmart and I constantly had "What's the cheapest reptile I can get". So I'd make sure to show it to them and then show them the additional $150+ of supplies that they'd need haha

Re: Looking for pet snake
about Bettas:
Actually, Bettas are often kept in miserable conditions, and aren't quite as simple to keep if you want them to thrive instead of merely survive. They are a tropical fish, and really should be kept in heated aquaria, and while they can survive better in foul water than many other fish because of their labyrinth organ which allows them to use atmospheric Oxygen this doesn't mean foul water is good for them. Sorry, I'm a tropical fish geek and the way bettas are advertised rather bothers me. The best common fish for small unheated aquaria is probably the white cloud mountain minnow, though it also prefers filtered water and is best kept in groups.
Is it just me, or do pet people automatically tend to think that their favorite animal species are kept more inadequately than those they like less? I've been doing a lot of research on various different types of pets, and this seems to be constant across fish, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

I think that is mostly just general ignorance. I know if I really like an animal, I'll do a ton of research on them. If it doesn't hold my interest, I may see one in the most awful situation and not thing anything of it - because I hadn't researched it, and I don't know any better. But I hear what you're saying, definitely. I am a tropical fish lover as well. I'm a betta keeper - 5g heated eclipse aquaria all the way

Re: Looking for pet snake
You can't put a price on something you like. It's like putting a price on your child. Fact is, if you are willing to put the time, thought, research, and common sense into something, then $ shouldn't be a question. I understand being tight on $, but all of us are passionate about our reptiles and other pets. If you want something bad enough and are responsible, then research what you want, how much it will cost to set them up properly, then save up until you get enough to spend to take care of and purchase your pet. If you're not willing to wait to get what you want or to do things properly, then you shouldn't have it. I rescue reptiles all the time from people who thought it was going to be cheap and easy, then find out they don't want it anymore because it's too much responsibility. Don't become like them.

Re: Looking for pet snake
We may be being a little harsh here- after all, he actually took his pet gecko to the vet, which automatically puts him above a fair number of people who buy reptiles. He also specified that he was looking for a cheap HEALTHY snake, and the health was more important than the species. That's not such a bad thing. I sort of assumed the $50 was for the snake only and he had a separate budget for the cage, food, heater and so on.

Re: Looking for pet snake
We may be being a little harsh here. After all, he actually took his pet gecko to the vet, which automatically puts him above the people who buy reptiles who don't get any medical care for them at all, and specifying a cheap but HEALTHY snake with preference on health above species is not such a bad way to go (providing beginners avoid giant pythons and so on). I wish that all reptiles for sale could be assumed to probably be in decent health, and having people put a premium on health is important. Since he had a gecko he may already have some of the equipment required for a baby snake. I assumed that the $50 was for the snake alone.
