sealing the wood?

I drew up plans in a program called anim8or for a snake cage, the front and top will be a frame and the sides/bottom will be plywood.

The stuff is going to be probably pine or some other cheap material I can find at lowe's and/or home depot. What type of cheap chemical can I use to properly seal the wood so it or the chemical itself wont harm the snake?

I was told Thompson's water seal would be good by the salesman, that sounds expensive?

First off, unless your planning on rebuilding a cage...........i wouldn't use plywood. Depending on what kind of snake and how humid it's gonna need to be i would really reconsider using plywood. I just made a snake cage for my bci and i made it out of birch. Birch is not an expensive wood but it's not as bad as plywood. In the long run birch would be better. I spent around $100 for all the wood. My cage is about 5x2x3. Make sure you use a non-toxic sealer.

just use properly sealed birch ply wood.. sealed properly that cage will last a life time.. nothing wrong with plywood at all.. all my cages are ply and i dont have any problems.. 2 years and running... of course birch is a better choice but to find sheets of it here is a problem.. if you can make a cage out of melmine you can make one out of ply... like i said seal it.. use an epoxy.

Use a good quality water base acrylic sealer and let it cure for abit a week and you'll be fine.
