Hi, Most people recomend 6'L 3'H 3' deep but I recomend 8'L 4'H 3 deep just incase you have the odd 4' plus savannah also he/she will have more room to roam and dig around...................

i love savannah monitors too! there so great to look at! believe me, you want to think about this long and hard. i had probably 8 or so years of herp experience behind me before i got my first sav and i didnt have him very long. i was going broke trying to afford to feed him and he was nasty as crap, i got rid of him before he was a foot long. i still talk to the lovely lady who owns him now. hes almost 3 feet and 10 times nastier. he gets out of his cage and goes after her cats and she has children. luckily that didnt go on long and she got him a more secure cage. their bites can give you stitches and their claws and tails do plenty damage when trying to handle them. there are tame savs but the people who own them are lucky. i handled my sav all the time and so does my friend who took him and he is opposite of tame. if you like big nasty lizards then the sav is just for you.

Yes one does encounter the nasty Bosc monitor (V. exanthematicus) sometimes - I had one for 8 years or so - hated me thoroughly, but I diligently cared for him as I did the others - I would be pissed off too if I was moved to a foreign land and forced to live in a box, with wierd smells, wierd mammals all about, and little seasonal exercise = mating!

I have a few Bosc monitors, none of which I would classify as nasty or aggressive (like I would classify every water monitor i've had the "pleasure" of caring for) I would say shoot for a cage at least 6 foot long and 4 foot tall. I like to give my savs about 1' of substrate to dig in. they love to dig, LOVE to dig. I was lucky in that all of mine are captive breed little darling. I don't do much in the way of taming them. They are (with one exception) securly locked in there boxes. They tolerate me messing with their cages while they are in there.

They do like to eat ... alot ... all the time. But if you're looking for a herp that's cheap to feed, just move on up to the corn snake forum. Know what you are getting into before you do.
