rescues?

i would like to start a rescue for exotic animals. I am not jumping into anything yet or making it official. I would just like to help the sad little animals. Death is to common and it is so easy to avoid. Not just a rescue but information for the keepers and such. I was thinking talk to the S.P.C.A.. I really thought about this when i saw a new petstore in my town thinking it had to easily be better than the other one. Wrong, her beardies where having tremors from dehydration and at 4 monthes old getting full grown crickets. Two iguanas at 8 monthes in a 40 gallon tank. Anoles, water dragons, and baby lepord geckos in the same enclore, and so on, and so on. Now this one is better than the other pet store amazingly enough. Now if this is where people are getting there info and main source of reptiles, it has me worried. Any input would be nice so feel free please.

Keep in mind that when you buy from a petstore to rescue their animals, they will only get more animals to replace those.

Most rescues see iguanas and large snakes as their main dealings. Be prepared to take care of these kinds of animals, as well as vet care, as usually no animal in perfect health is given up to a rescue.

One step would be letting the local SPCA have your phone number incase a herp comes in, but I have not heard many good things about the SPCA regarding herps...might just be me.

the pet-shop thing is bad too. i dont even know a lot about reptiles and i always lecture the guy in charge of the reptile section in the pet-shop in my city everytime i go there about how their stuff is set up. especially yhe iguannas since their put with basilisks and they dont have uvb lights and they look all shrivelled. poor lilttle things.Pet shops shouldnt be aloud to sell reptiles. It would be fun to open a reptile store where the people working there took proper care of the reptiles and knew what they were talking about. but sadly no one cares enough to do that i guess.

Im thinking of making care sheets of petshops so they could give out to new reptile owners.i doubt theyd refuse *shrugs*

one chain im my area does that..

but as for rescues if you look into it harder you may be able to find something about basicly foster care.... youd take in herps that need rescue till they can be placed a perminate home.. im pretty sure ive heard of it, and they do that with cats but a percentage of food and vet care is paid for..

^^LOL! So they can inform customers about how to care for their new pets the way THEY don't, or don't know HOW!!! That cracks me up.

When I mentioned to the shop owner here in northern BC about the abysmal and health threatening conditions of their rep room, (which incidentally smelled so foul it almost caused me to vomit, and the cages were filthy with deposit), she stated that "they won't be here for long anyway". (Can you believe THAT?) She also didn't sell or even KNOW what a thermostat was. It'd be like buying a car from a seven yr. old. I personally wouldn't assist this kind of vendor to sell ANYTHING. She has chams, anoles, leos, rosy boas...Oy vey, poor things!
If a seller can't provide a care sheet for a customer, and further doesn't know how to care for the pet themselves, they SHOULDN'T be permitted to sell them. Jmo.

I would recommend doing a forum search on the topic. There have been several discussions from individuals seeking to open a rescue, and very valid points and thorough discussions were made. Opening a rescue takes a great deal of financial support, not to mention the time needed to care for them properly. Keep this in mind, and definitely do a search.
