Jardine's parrot information

Well my daughter saw a couple of these at a pet store recently and I have been hearing alot on how a good dad would buy her one!

I have done some research but wanted to hear some keepers experiences. We have three cats that I must say I am worrying about even though they have never shown anything threatening towards our other pets ex. degus, snakes, ....

What are your thoughts on these birds?
Are they sociable?
Are they loud?
Any breeders in Ontario?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would search for breeders on the net and there is a yahoo parrots group with lots of deals if you do get one you will save a lot of money buying private. Would this be your first bird?

Never kept them before but I'd deffently say subscribe to birdtalk, I looked through to of my magazines but it didn't really say anything on them maybe give us them latin name pet stores sometime change names or use outdated ones.

Hi I actually thought about getting one at a local petstore. Their vocab is slightly lower then an African grey. They are talkitive. They are quite social but prefer one person. They have mixed reviews about if they are good with kids it says depending on the individual bird. You should pick up a Barrons book about a companion Bird (can't really remember the title) It is yellow and has four birds on the cover. Cockatoo, an Amazon, a Grey and ...something else. I found a lot of info on the net with various seach engines. Be prepare a bird is a big commitment ( I decided not to get one right now) especially when they are young and nippy or their terrible twos. TB

Like Tim and July said they are a one person bird and are quit load in the late evening around sun down unless the companion is there with them and they will pick the person they want not the other why around good talkir and verry playful mischeivious little buggers ,if you go to abird4sale on yahoo grops there are a few peoplel that have them in ont and quebc look up Carlom Woods she has some of the nices Birds I will send You her E-mailwhen i find it again

Thank you all for the replies. I am yet undecided on whether to get a bird for my daughter. I have to do alot of research since (as parents all know) most of the duties will fall upon my wife and I. I will try to look for a good book and go from there!

Any Ontario breeders would be helpful if you come by some.

I would suggest a Senegal or a Myers. They are great starter parrots. They are colourful,friendly,talkative and very playful. Where exactly do you live maybe I can give you some suggestions on breeders for certain type birds.

Thanks so much for the reply Ginette. I live in Georgetown which is slightly northwest of Toronto. I don't mind driving a distance to get a nice bird though.

I will research a Senegal and Myers.

You know the store by my place (Ottawa) has a very nice Senegal. She is very sweet. She was hatched in June, someone bought her and turned out to be allergic so she is selling threw the store for $850. This includes the cage and all her toys. That's an amazing price. I've played with this baby and she is a very nice bird.
