Question is this true

when i signed my lease for my new apartment it said that animals of any kind were not prohibited in or around the premises!
my old landlord is a well known lawyer in my town and she said they could not legally evict us if we aquired the animals after we moved in because of some new law that they passed stating that animals are part of the family is this true or are there different stipulations that i am not awre of?
thanks for any help!

If you already signed the lease you've pretty much shot yourself in the foot unless there's a bylaw in your city specifically prohibiting landlords from putting such clauses in their leases.

But check with bylaw enforcement anyhow and see what's what... Also check to see if there's a renter's association or a Landlord Tennant board in your area as well.

The 'Fluffy Act' is a fact in Ontario. Unless the animal is illegal in your city/town/region, they can't refuse to let you have pets, provided you stay within the legal limit of animals and species. They can charge you for any damage done by the animal and if you scare the heebie jeebies out of the other tennants they can start an eviction notice. The standard leases do say 'no pets' in an attempt to stop people from acquiring them, since not many people know about the law.
