The design is admittedly complex and labor intensive but I am still happy with it. Anyway, take from it what you will. Hopefully you find SOME useful info in all those posts!

I started building this simple rack for under $200.00 this morning.
Still need to add 4" flexwatt for belly heat and backing, cost will still come in close to $200 with tubs. This rack can hold 21 = 12qt or 14 = 27qt tubs or a mixture of both. Everything can be found in your local hardware store except for maybe the flexwatt. It took me about 2 hrs to build.

Just a question, as we're sort of on the topic.

Is it better to build a rack where the Rubbermaid’s still use the lid or the design where they slide in perfectly and the shelves become the lid? Or is it personal preference?

I personally prefer to build lidless racks, just so I don't have to pull out the tub completely every time.

Thats how I like them as well, makes workingin the tubs a pain. I like that rack though1 Nice craftsman ship.. Wanna build me one now..lol.. Ill pay for the supplies..hehe

I thought of going lidless for a while, but then went with lids for a few personal preferences. I plan on stacking another rack (new born 6qt tub rack) on top of this one, that would make it 7FT tall.

I went with lids for piece of mind, added security, added safety, humidity control, etc. Eitherway building your own racks is the way to go.

If the snake you are keeping in the rack needs higher humidity then you might want to keep the lids on. The melamine surface will start to bubble after awhile (it does take awhile). Another good alternative is to just give it a quick coat with melamine paint on the bottom of each shelf to make it a little more water resistant.
