Angry Outraged!!

While watching the news a commercial came on with the message of " Please do not purchase exotic animals, go to your local animal shelter and purchase and save an animal". Guess what these exotic animals where that they where refering too, Reptiles! An they kept driving the nail in about salmonella, while showing images of an iguana and what looked to be a bci. I am outraged as the post implies. They gave there site, but i didnt catch it, if i see it again i will post it. jon

That's fine. Anyone with half a head on their shoulders will disregard such 'public service announcements', do their own research and hopefully make the right decision for themselves. Honestly, I believe anyone fickle enough to be swayed by a TV ad is someone that our hobby can do without anyways.

Unfortunately, people like that make up a significant chunk of the population. That, combined with the irresponsible keepers that give the rest of us a bad rep, and the hobby is being seriously threatened. Bans are being put up left, right, and center. So whether we want those people to participate in the hobby or not is irrelevant, as having them in opposition is a serious concern.

It was probably propaganda from an animal rights, anti-reptile keeping organization that masquerades as animal welfare. Most likely ASPCA or HSUS (or H$U$ I should say). Get affiliated with a herpetology society and work on public education regarding proper husbandry and zoonotic disease prevention education. The risk of contracting Salmonella from reptiles is a favorite reason cited by anti-reptile keeping groups, for reptiles not to be kept as pets. These groups frequently misinform the public by quoting biased figures, facts, reports and worse case scenarios in their attempts to distort public perception of reptiles and stop a lawful hobby. They intentionally omit the fact that dogs and cats often carry zoonotic diseases as well and that improperly cooked poultry contributes to a majority of salmonella poisonings.
