So I have a Cal King that went missing and the people in my appartment block found out. I have learned some interesting things:

1. Apparently Cal Kings are venomous (I have properly educated that one away)

2. Apparently a 3 foot Cal King eats Weiner Dogs and Babies (another one that I have educated away)

The people in my block were gracious enough to call the Animal Services Branch on me and this morning I was inspected. All of my snakes are legal so I wasn't worried and the Animal Services guy was really nice about it. He asked if I was harbouring any Boa Constrictors or anything like that and I said no. He asked to see my snakes so I showed him (He likes banana phase Cal Kings btw). He asked about husbandry and feeding so I told him that I feed F/T and my enclosures were right there for him to look at.

He sat outside my block in his van for about 10 minutes after that so I think he was radioing in to see if my snakes were legal or not. He ended up just driving away.

My brush with the law....what a great way to start a Friday morning...

Any thoughts?

Wow, that was close. I'm glad you espcaped with all your snakes.

I'm sorry for your inconvience, but I do find that hilarious... isn't it great how ignorance still prevails, despite all the "intelligence" humans are said to behold?!?! Good luck finding your little escapee!! =)

You know, I think there might be something to this "Baby" food source. I mean everyone seems to think that every snake eats them, nutritional value must be pretty good on babies. I mean, I can barely get my Ball python to eat more then once a month, maybe if I started offering babies I'd get a better feeding response.

I think we need to setup a baby breeding project and see if this popular alternative food source for snakes is a viable one.

From a legal point of view, what right did they have to enter your home and inspect any thing in there?
I think maybe your rights were just trampled on a bit.

That's a good point Trevor, at what point is it legal for Animal Services to enter your home for an inspection?

If a complaint is made are you legally required to let them in your home, or is the same as say a search warrent where unless they have a court order saying they are allowed to search your house they can't? Can you refuse to let animal services in your house? I never thought of the legalites behind it, I just assumed they were a goverment orginization so if they wanted to subject you to a search of your house they could.

From what I've learned (and no I'm not a lawyer and NO this is NOT legal advice, so I will not be held accountable for anyone's actions if they quote or follow this)..

They can't just inspect your house.. they can ask you let them in, but you have the right to refuse and they will have to obtain a warrant for search (and seizure in somecases) to come in and look around.

The question I have is: If you let them into your home... for 'courtesy' purposes, and THEN they ask you to search your collection, could you STILL refuse?

If you did, I'm sure they would obtain a warrent and return at a later time to complete their investigation, which, in the meantime, gives you the ability to hide anything you shouldn't have :::naughty, naughty:::

OR, would they loophole the fact that you let them in, and they therefore are allowed to search?

Very interesting... in any case, by allowing them to search your collection you have caused yourself a lot less stress in the long run, but I do believe ANY search on private property should be preceded with a warrent. (I'm not a legal representative either, but I used to work in a law office, so I do know some basics...) I'd like to see what anyone else here can dig up...

I know that all of my snakes are legal, so while it was unexpected, I did what I thought would make my life easiest. I have nothing to hide. I still haven't figured out how she got out but I will definitely be looking for other enclosure styles if/when I find her.
