Screen/wood cages??

In all books caresheets it says when keeping chameleons only use screen cages.

Since I got my veiled cham(when he was 3 inches long in 2/24/03), he was in a cage that was 2x2x3, that had a screen side and 2 wood sides, the top and bottom were made of wood and a glass front. He has done well in this cage with no problems.

And now I have gotten a reptile room(I guess 28 reptiles is alot of reptiles to have in your bedroom). And now I am just going to keep my veiled and my atb in my bedroom, because they are good display animals.

This what I was thinking............I was thinking about getting a display cabinet from wal-mart that is seperated into two, one side for my cham and the other for my atb, they are all wood but the glass front......would that be okay for my veiled?

they need plenty of ventilation so you might be drilling some vent holes

I would say definitly not. Some chameleons, while not recommended, have been fine in cages without screening, but there are many health risks that some along with inproper ventilation.

Why not revmove the glass from the front and replace it with a mesh, and then at least there is some air flow.

I would seriously recomend replacing the front top and at least one other side with screen. Also the atb you speak of is this a snake. If it is you might want to consider not putting it so close to your cham. And if you do make sure your cham has no way of ever seeing it as I have heardf they are extremely afraid of snakes.\
just a thougth

o.k what you can do is cut squares on the 2 sides and the top. This is where you can put your screen, this allows ventilation. But it you spray water and such wont it warp(sp) and stuff???

the would will not warp and such if it is treated properly i would recomend paintiing the inside with an outdoor water based latex paint. A couple coats and the cage will last for ever. For better results sand lightly before and after the first coat.

Good luck
