help/advice needed

I am attempting to build my first enclosure for my chameleon S.A. and I will need to waterproof the wood. I'm converting something into his new home and it already has paint on it. I would like to keep it painted if possible. Can I put a clear coat gloss on it to waterproof it?? What type of product will not be harmful to him???

thanx in advance

i used a water based varathane to finish my cage off, you can use satan, semi-gloss, or glass, that's up to you, just make sure it is water based and not oil based
