Taking your snakes outside?

A little while ago I asked about snakes and UV......from the responses I got, I saw that UV is not good for snakes...

I would love to take mine outside, I have taken my Colombian out in the shade.

Do I really need to be so cautious?

I don't intend on keeping em out all day or anything.....

Other than neighbours, is there any precautions, or things I should watch for when I do take them out?

I see the pics of snakes in the grass, love those pics....but.....how do you stop or avoid your snake "running" away?

If your snake is diurnal, sun should be no problem. I've never heard that UV was bad for snakes, but I'm not really in a position to refute it.

I have never heard its bad for them, just that its not necassary at all for proper husbandry. I take my guy out all the time for some photography time

I couldnt see how it could be BAD for them in anyway, very highly just unnecassary but deffinetly not bad...correct me if im wrong.

EDIT: The only thing i can recall of people saying its not good for a snake to be out to long, is because most are nocturnal so sun in their eyes could potentially be painful...not sure if its true, but thats what ive been told. If the above post is correct and yours is diurnal then your more then fine...

Someone better tell all of those sun-basking snakes that UVB is bad for them! And to think, they have been exposed to UV rays for millions of years without knowing how detrimental it is to their health! We must make a large collection of rubbermaids and enclosures and get these dang snakes indoors before they all...DIE! It's no wonder the dinosaurs went extinct! And to think, all this time they thought it was an asteroid...

i use UV on my vine snakes and i can swear its the best thing for them. i have never had any problems with snakes and UV. infact i always see great results when i use UV lights on my animals.

And if UV is bad for snakes. i guess we should bring all those wild snakes in.........................

On another note, the only precautions I would suggest is to watch for insects, especially ants. In addition, do not go around the block displaying your boa constrictor. The last thing we need is more bylaws...

Why would I be asking about vine snakes in the boa forum

if you can be serious for a moment, is there any risk of "sunburn" etc.? And no, I'm not throwing sunscreen on my snake.

not even gonna touch that one with a 10foot pole as its not worth my time.

Christina, it was more of a joke for all of our amusement. Afterall, it is not your fault that someone provided you with that information. Also, you said UV is not good for snakes, so I believe Jordans reference was referring to the fact that he uses UVB bulbs on his snakes. I guess text is often times hard to comprehend over the internet, in regards to ones' tone in a post.

I was more or less giggling at whoever gave you this information. Often times, common sense is the best tool for someone to use. I am not an expert, but I did think to myself: how can UVB rays be harmful, when the majority of snakes bask directly under the rays from the sun? And that is what answered the question for me.

I take mine outside every once and awhile, but not for long periods..

Usually only about 15- 20 min at a time.

IMO it doesnt do them any harm, and they get a nice vacation from being inside the cage all day..

I say take your boa outside in the sun, it wont do them any harm, just dont leave them out all day..
