You can not buy heat tape "legally" in Canada. Port Credit Pets might sell some. Not sure though. Your best bet is buying it from the bean farm.

How much heat tape and what size do you need? I have some extra 11 inch available. Send me a PM or email if you are interested.

Greg, for the millionth time on this forum, heat tape is not "illegal" as you put it. It is UL Listed which is just as good as being CSA Approved. Pass it on. Unregistered; I have plenty that I sell. Let me know how much you're looking for, and we'll work something out.

Sorry. I should have thought about what I was posting before I posted it. lol You are right. The only problem is if it is the cause of a fire in Canada, because it is not CSA approved, an insurance company will not cover damage. I would use it as I am not worried there would be a problem, but on the off chance something did happen, you could have problems with the insurance company.

You could use heat rope, thats approved in canada. Its almost the same as heat tape but its just a wire and you simply place the long wire as you want it. You can get it at home depot or something I think.

Greg - Any of the lighting you do in your terrariums is not CSA approved either, since you are not a CSA certified electrician. It's when something is not UL listed that insurance won't cover it in case of fire. I once believed as well that something had to be CSA to be covered by insurance, but then my younger brother became an electrician and I found out that it is not the case. Live and learn, eh?
Unregistered - Heat rope is horrendously expensive compared to heat tape. Buy from Mykee. He's a great guy to deal with.

'Thank you, thank you very much' (in my BEST Elvis voice). BTW, public admiration always deserves a price break on your next order. LOL....

Greg, my brand new Maytag fridge is not CSA Approved, but is UL Listed. I bought it from Sears a week ago. My insurance company (which I phoned earlier yesterday) laughed at me when I asked if I would be covered in case of accident. Just a heads-up.

Just a hypothetical:
I wired my own racks - I am not an electrician. House burns down *knock on wood*, and insurance comes over and tells me I'm up sh*t creek...
If my brother, who is an electrician, came over and wired it the exact same way I did, insurance would be cool with that...?
Maybe I should just take everything apart, buy my brother a case of beer to come over and put it all back together again...

No Will, the point is, any person can do their own wiring in a home. I can wire up a light socket on a dimmer, and I can install heat tape too. The point is, unless your insurance SPECIFICALLY excludes fires caused by heat sources, you're fine.
