for large monitors, the initial price quickly becomes irrelevant in comparison to housing and feeding them. Young monitors feed daily, adults require huge enclosures and a lot more food than a similar sized or larger snake.

When it comes to temperament, the number of Nile monitors that remain flighty and nasty is far greater than the number that calm down and become easier to handle. Some of it has to do with the sort of interaction they receive but most of it comes down to individual temperament.

Just a few things to consider, but monitors are worth the effort in the long run. Very entertaining.

Do not buy a niloticus because its cheep, get one if its what you wish for.
Niloticus are awesome creatures that shod have more respect from varanophils, they are senselessly slathered by the 1,000,000s and exported as pets by the 100,000s, 95% of these will die within a year, these monitors evolved in perhaps the most hostile territory, surrounded by Africa’s top predator, no wonder they have character! There will to survive is admirable, they typically take 4-5 years to calm down, when adult they stop fearing you. most peoples wont keep them this long, and will ad to the already long list of peoples who will give them a bad reputation, others who persevered learn to love them and have nothing but respect for this icon monitor.
