hygrometer inaccurate? Plz help me!

alright, so i just got a new thermometer / hygrometer the otherday. I am thinking it is innacurrate or broken, or something. So i am testing it as we speak.

I set it up in a large yogourt container, which has a wet jay-cloth in it. I wet the cloth with warm water. the yogourt container is covered with a dry rag. I have it set-up with a 100 or 150 watt spot lamp like 3 inches above it ( i forget and its too bright to read). I put my old thermometer's probe on the top of the jaycloth, and the new one in the middle of the cloth. The surface of that wet rag is 103 degrees F, the middle of the rag is reading 94.8 F (measured with the possibly broken probe). All the while, the humidity is 30%! Is that even possible to be in something that small, at those temps, and the container is filled with a more then damp rag? It just doesn't seem right to me. I should tell you that both meter's are set to outdoor. Is that the right setting? What is the difference? Please get back to me, i don't have long before i get my chameleon and i have to get this worked out! THanks

Geoff

Is it indoor/outdoor? I had the same problem. I realised that the probe only measures temperature, not humidity. Only the indoor part can. This is the case with mine anyhow.

yeah i figured it out, like somebody mentioned it only measures temperature at the base (not from the probe). That is just annoying really, because now i have to have the entire thing inside the cage.

Does it matter where i put the meter (high, low, middle, on the back, on the door) or should the readings be close anywhere i put it?

Thanks

Geoff
