sav quesiton

just a quick question causs im paranoid
My sav sleeps all day..hes active when i wake him up and he eats REALLY well..so is he just lazy? He'll bask and move around to different spots to sleep but he just lies everywhere...is that what savs do..thanks for letting me waist ur time

Haha, no problem. I have lots of time to waste. I think they are nocturnal. Now I'm not experianced and could be wrong, but how long have you had him/her? Did he/she just start sleeping at this time, or is he/she newly bought? Temperature could also be an issue. Just answer my questions before you do anything yet!!

temps are good, i made sure with a caresheet like 2 weeks ago but i dont keep a thmometer in there all the time..i have like two and everyonce in a while i change tanks to make sure everything is stable. Hes been like this since i bought him..about 3 months ago id say..it was the day of the last show from pcpc.

Hey Bartman,

O dont worry about time. First things first, get a thermometer in there! Thats fine, they will do that, mine does exactly what you described. Its normal, when you put food in(crikets?) does it wake up from being disturbed and will it go after the food? More movement is better, try putting lots of crix or crawly things in there. Put meal/wax/super/butter/silk worms in there and it will go looking. Lots of little bugs(so it dont fill itself quickly) and it will be looking more. Anyways that behavior is fine.

Then your time should be spent reading some more accurate material, because they are NOT nocturnal!

Bartman, sleeping all day is DEFINATLY not good. These guys hide their weaknesses quite well. I recommend checking everything, bask should be quite high etc. If hes eating well you may want to have him dewormed. should be home free after that.

Mine is 105F basking spot, he moves aroudn but he like stays in a spot for a few hours, forages for food, then finds another spot, and reapeats. I didnt think that was bad, i know of 5 other savannahs that do that? They sleep more than mine. I am going to be building a custom cage soon though, maybe its the space he has and he is bored of it?

Hes very active when i throw crickets in..he'll also take silks but he doesnt seem to like mealworms or wax worms. Havnt tried butters yet. Im gonna go pick up a bunch soon

Don't pick up a bunch if you aren't sure he will eat them. Buy a few to experiment with.

just keep him on crickets, honestly. My savs didnt take supers as juvis either, I think they find them intimidating..

The thing with crix is that when i offer them to him they hide, and when he does find them when he goes to eat one he usually swallows small pieces of mulch..what should i do?

Mine takes after the supers like a champ. Hes about 12", i will flick them around the floor and he will chase around after them. He seems to love them, and wax he likes too. Same with silks.

When i offer them in a bowl he doesnt take them..only crix causs he runs after them

Bartman, if hes swallowing excessive amounts thats not good, but with the right heat and lots of water monitors rarely run into problems. I bet hes not swallowing it though, my guys are quite good at spitting out the stuff they're not meant to swallow haha.

Keep him on crickets, dont waste your time and money with other food. Crickets are good as they give the monitor exercise and most of all they give him all the nutrients he needs to grow. Worry about a more varied diet once the savannah is larger then you HAVE to get creative as insects alone won't fill up an older sav, but for now, its easy and perfectly healthy to just use crickets.
