Spyware, adware, popups...>>>>

Greetings,
I know that recently there was a thread dealing with popup and adware file removal. I have downloaded and currently now regularly use adaware and spybot. The programs are great at removing little files but does anyone know of programs that will halt the automatic download of these files onto my computer?
I have heard of programs that will create a message saying that the computer is currently downloading something and asks you if you would like to continue the download or not.
It really irks me when I am surfing the net and all of a sudden some message pops up saying that my computer is now finished downloading some program that I didn't consent to!!!
Thanks for any help guys.
Cheers,
R
P.S. I am currently still using Windows 98 as my platform if that matters.

Well I personally use Norton anti-virus and Norton Personal firewall and not once have I had a program download itself like you mentioned onto my computer. Only when I install programs i know contain something do they ever make it onto my computer.
Maybe that will help you.

I am with Jamie. I have never ever ever had a program install itself on my computer and I use Norton.

It usually pops up as "malicious script" I think. Maybe its something different.

I also use SPYSWEEPER for the spyware-adware that i know will be installed and it ALWAYS does a great job of cleaning my computer right out.

Thanks for the link :-). On my computer it does sometimes (although VERY rarely) misses a few things however I do use the Free Version of it so I can hardly complain.

Thanks for that info Shane, Luckly i haven't had any problems with it yet. So far it's taken everything off that's been thrown at it. I will keep a bit closer eye on it though.
