A couple of questions that you need to ask yourself before getting this snake....
Do you know how much it costs to feed a growing retic?
How will you be able to pay for vet bills, caging, and food for this snake for the next 20-25 years?
What will you do with a snake when you turn 17 and you cant find a place to live that will allow snakes and you Dad does not want it anymore?
You AND your father should read this......
"article" and think long and hard about buying a reticulated python.
There are a lot of other snakes out there that would make a much better "starter" snake.... take a look at Ball Pythons, Corn Snakes, and Rosy Boas. They stay much smaller and are a LOT easier to place into new homes in the unforntunate event that you lose interest as you get older or can not house the snake any more.

A retic can reach over 12 feet in 4 years. Larger if fed more.
I don't think a retic is the next step from a Ball Python. I would get a carpet python or even a boa. Retics get large, FAST! And can be eating 2 or 3 rabbits every 10 to 14 days.
In 4 years the snake can be big enough to need a room size enclosure. There are a lot of considerations to owning a Retic. A couple of week a research isn't going to gain you any experience. I would find someone in your area that owns a giant snake and befirend them. Ask them the questions, hang out around the snake.
Getting any giant snake is not something to be taken lightly. It is a life long responsibility (at least 20 to 25 years). If you and your father feel you guys are ready for a retic, do more than a couple of weeks of research. Do at least 2 months worth, and then find someone who has one and go play with it for a while.
I always recommend at least a years worth or research and dealing with someon else's giant snake before getting one of your own. THis is the ONLY way to get the experience you need to handle and raise one of these snakes.
Good Luck

To add on to what I and The_Snake_King have already said.... When and if you and your father decide to get a retic or burm please adopt one from a shelter or rescue instead of buying one from a pet store. Hundreds upon hundreds of large snakes turn up in rescues every day because people cant handle then, afford to keep them, or just get sick of them.

A retic can reach 10' in ONE YEAR!!! Can is the key word! they won't be heavy bodied yet , but fast and lanky. In 4 years depending on sex figure 15'-22' If it doesn't reach that size, it is not being kept properly. After the first year they start puting on wieght too. Plus add on to that that they can be highly agressive and hard to read. I just got one as a rescue. He was docile when i picked him up, now he is very irate, and will bite before even thinking if your a threat or not. he is only a few months old and already 7' No where close to a year yet, and definately not being overfed. They are like weeds. Not saying they cant or shouldnt be kept, just make sure you know what your getting into is all. We don't need another retic in the rescue programs.
When the care shets say how large they get, it is totally true. You will not get the exception to the rule. It will happen to you.

I know i know,im jst asking all of you who have been bitten how does it feel?We are trying to decide between
burmese
retic
or a savanna moniter
what do you think?I want one that is long lived, can be very tame, easy to feed and gets large. What do you think? Also how big does a SM get and how old do they live? Were still heading for the retic though, and yes were adopting from a shelter near by,they have MANY babys that were neglected because they bit the owner.Maybe when i grown and have a large enough cage ill get two,ive decided to do more that a few weeks research also.ill try to get pics then...

LOL You hardly feel the bite. and after about 20 seconds after the bite you don't feel much of anything. Specially if an adult retic wraps you.
Savannah Monitors get to be about 4' can be placid, very easy to feed. Providing their temps are right. Plus i thinks its way cool to walk around with a monitor on a leash. Monitors are fun.
