Dealing with mold and smell in substrate

I thought it would be interesting to start a discussion about what methods we all use to control mold in our species that require high humidity. I have used cypress, which was the best for controlling mold that I have used. It was not entirely mold free, and i moved on from cypress because it is not a sustainable product. I now use coco coir. This product does a pretty good job.

I have been exploring ways to perfect my substrate by mixing other substances. The first thing that came to mind was adding bamboo as I remember reading it has antimicrobial properties. Now I am leaning towards adding activated carbon, but am a little concerned about the mess it may make.

The next line of thought was brought on by the fact that my bioactive tanks never have mold. Is the best answer trying to use a bioactive substrate without the plants and lights? I worry about keeping a cuc healthy in a tub situation, and again the mess. What do you all think?

Just drop in spingtails and woodlice, any mold will just be eaten, and if not too large, so will the piles of poop.

CUC will do fine without lights and heat. Tropical species can't deal with heat and need lots of moist.
