new kankakee bull

Been busy but I got back around midnight to empty this out of the pillow case and let him warm up while finalizing some things. Sorry for the quality but my camera is old and all except the basic room light had turned off plus the infrared showing up purplish so I lost even more quality uploading and tweaking the lighting. That's a whole lot of pissy bull snake you can hear coiled under there though. He got woken up out of brumation recently, moved back to his breeder's house, and then picked up by strangers and driven 4hrs so he's in a great mood. I think my husband jumped 3' when it struck out of the bin. I pivoted my leg some to be ready to deter any escape but he was satisfied his bluff got rid of the threat and slid back in. I love bull snakes. lol I'll have to get pics since he's calmed some. Although, he's establishing his new cage as territory to defend. He is so thick my small hands are kind of useless trying to support him. I had to wrap him around my forearm to free my other hand for directing his head. Have to check the lid periodically before I fall asleep to see if it is weighted down enough because it's not quite finished but he's in a room I'm emptying to be my new reptile room. He can't go anywhere or hide anywhere at his size so it will just be collecting over 6' of pissed off snake again. I don't think I have a scale that will weigh that yet. I planned to get a baby kankakee this fall but this one got listed within driving distance. Planning to get him a gf in the future. The person said he held back a lot of females lately but I need to put the rest of my spring money into suitable enclosures. My other bull is growing like a weed and needs out of his 3' tank and my sumatran python is still in a 28gallon bin. The python hasn't been ready to handle the visibility of a glass tank.

Ok either I still don't have this youtube thing figured out or it's my computer so the link itself should be https://youtu.be/D3Cav3BLlRA

Re: new kankakee bull

Usually you can go ahead and handle one despite the display but you do need to know the snake. They've got a nice set of teeth if they feel the need to land a strike and it can be a substantial puncture wound. I'm not sure how much bluff this one is at the moment since his life just changed and he doesn't know me but even with all that he shows no inclination to bite once you have him lifted up off the ground and his strikes have all pulled up short or purposely were not lined up to connect. Still best to find a way to avoid that head until you've got your hands on them. If you've got patience and don't startle easy a good cb bull isn't actually that hard to learn how to handle. Not really anymore risk than a lot of similar sized snakes that simply make less noise. I'm probably more likely to be blindsided by my sumatran python some day. I've only truly been tagged by a rosy boa of all things in my captive snake keeping so far.

Beautiful animal! Nice and noisy too haha. I fixed your youtube link, only put the code in between the tags. Not the whole link. So only this: D3Cav3BLIRA.

Re: new kankakee bull

Do not trust my husband to put together anything that requires taking the logistics of an animal into account. I should know better by now..... I'm not even bothering putting the snake back in the enclosure until he brings me new materials to fix his attempt. Like usual. At least it's less of an issue than having to rebuild the top of an aquarium stand to sit level because it wasn't just going to lean. It was going to apply somewhat twisting forces to the front right seal.

Re: new kankakee bull

My new young normal female bull snake has quite an attitude. When she's disturbed she coils and hisses at anything moving within her sight. Makes for an interesting display at feeding time, lol. I tried dangling a freshly killed mouse by the tail, same way I feed my male fire bull rats, but where the male takes the rat she just got all pissy and hissy. I finally dropped the mouse near her and left her alone, went back about an hour later and she had eaten it, and was soaking in her water bowl. I'm wondering of she has mites. My male bull never soaks, even in shed.

Re: new kankakee bull

My younger one took his last gerbil while hissing aggressively and dropped it in the pot he was wrapped around (bioactive tanks with plants and I use the pots to get water to the bottom layer) before turning back to coil, strike, and hiss at me. I thought he might not want it so I tried to pick it back up but heck no. That's his gerbil. Fine. If you don't eat it though I will be annoyed with you. At some point it disappeared. It needed guarded first which I didn't know a snake would ever do. That guy is 90% bluff though. Even if he's striking or tucked in his cave carrying on I can just reach past him to his body and pick him up. The worst he's done is accidentally cut my knuckle when trying to do a bluffing strike past my hand. Usually if I just keep my hands there to show I won't back off he turns to leave and it's safer to pick him up. Then after a minute of debate about trying to go back to his cage he calms down and will hang out on my arm. He does hate the cat though. I have to watch my idiot furball who thinks it might be fun to bop the snakes on the head....

My husband was freaking out because the room was very cluttered after messing with the mesh lid design and lighting system so when I recaptured the new bull after it put on it's impressive display, that I just covered his head with a blanket and grabbed a body loop to pull him out, I had to walk right next to my husband with it. I wasn't really holding it's head but watching it for clues of it's behavior. Bulls are amusing and adding my husband makes it more so. I try to laugh only internally. He's not going to do anything now that he's being carried and he's not even carried by you. I'm turning his head periodically when it aims somewhere I don't want. Just hold the lid open before I lose feeling in my hand and chill out.
