I saw that a few days ago. It would be so great to witness that. Those species are very closely related, so it doesn't surprise me that two males would face off like this.

very interesting video. i'm surprised to learn that different species would inter-mingle like that. makes you wonder what other snakes do this.

While combat between same species occurs over mating rights I think it occurs over territories as well. Where overlapping distributions occur and the likelihood of intergrades being produced there probably are also duels for territory and available prey as well. This could explain the dominance duels in males of different species also.

I wonder if there is any information about snakes being territorial out there. My gut reaction is that they are not, and the scientist interviewed doesn't seem to think this is the cause. On the other hand I would not be surprised if this another area where we underestimate these creatures and few studies have been done due to this prejudice.

Some snakes are territorial like the black mamba that will use termite mounds to den in. Having proved it is safe and a great area for food and water as well as warmth it will became territorial have that area. Territory regardless of what species will be based on food, water, safety and mates. If an animal finds these be it snake or lion then they will hold on to it because it knows the benifits. Snakes will also become territorial during mating will often fight of competition. A good area will most likely attract a mate and an enemy. Excerpted from quora...
