latex paint for custom reptile cage?

Making a cage, wondering how to keep the plywood from getting humid and warping inside the enclosure, I've been told you can use latex paint. Wondering if this is a valid statement? I'll be sealing the edges and corners with aquarium safe silicone.

Use Valspar Reserve paint from Lowe's (zero VOC). Let it cure for a few days, then coat it with a clear lacquer, preferably polyurethane. Let it cure again, for a few days, before you use the enclosure for your snake.

Re: latex paint for custom reptile cage?

I use Varathane 3x thick to seal wood door frames or smaller parts of wood construction that have been added to melamine for instance. Varathane also makes a water based high traffic floor finish that I use when I am sealing the entire inside, especially the bottom. Really the only trick to getting a nice thick finish is being patient and giving each coat the proper time it needs to cure and out gas.

The enclosure im painting is a little over 100 gallons. Is a latex paint the only option of paint?
