In Memory Of Our Lost Reptiles...
My Eastern Cottonmouth passed away and its been weighing heavily on my mind this early morning...
It was a freak accident how it happened. She wasnt the least bit aggressive to me. Everytime id come in the room she would come up to the glass and just watch me.
Well one evening she was acting like she was hungry so i told
her that id get her a rat or 2....(yeah i talk to my snakes). I went and got her feeder and came back in the room. She saw me with the rat and got really excited like she always has. Im 28...she was my 1st hot snake. I caught her as a neonate when i was 11. I opened the cage and dropped it in there. She followed the rat around and finally struck at it. The rat moved and she ended up with a big splinter piercing her tongue! I freaked out and didnt know what to do! She thrashed around and i was helpless. About an hour later my baby girl was dead. Aftee i examined her, i saw the splinter pierced the roof of her mouth and pierced her brain. How do you recover from that?
She was there before going to Iraq and after i got back. Taking care of her kept me sane for yrs. Now shes gone ...
Thats my story about a common Eastern Cottonmouth named BABY GIRL.

Re: In Memory Of Our Lost Reptiles...
So sorry for your loss. It is devastating to watch your snake pass, feeling helpless.
We lost our first bredli in a similar way. "He" was an adoptee from a broken home. There was a small lump about a third of the way down its length, which the previous owner said would go away. It started to grow, so we took it to a vet. After some antibiotics to shrink it, and inconclusive blood tests, one night it fell off its climbing pole, and started to have a seizure. Before we could ring a vet, or do any thing else, it had passed. After a necropsy, we discovered "he" was a she, and had a massive internal tumour around her heart.

Re: In Memory Of Our Lost Reptiles...
That's awful I lost my first snake, I was so attached to her. We started to notice a lump in her mouth so we took her to the vet.got antibiotics for her, used them all and it didn't go away. Then she stopped eating and lost a lot of weight, revealing two other very large lumps. We took her back to the vet, they said they were tumors, most likely cancerous. She gave us the option of surgery which would cost a lot and guarantee nothing, let her live at home and see if she got better, or put her down. It broke my heart to do it and my dad and i both cried for days but we put her down. The morning before she was lying in her water and i thought she was dead, I'd touch her and she wouldn't move. She was the best snake I ever had, I still miss Ger like crazy.
