Yellow conda with ammonia smelling urates
So the last couple of unrated my male yellow has had a strong smell of ammonia. This last one today was the strongest and I'm just wondering if any of you guys have experienced this before.
He drinks water constantly and he even gets a soak in the tub (really big sterilite) about every two weeks. And he drinks heaps while in there too.
This last one today I didn't notice until later, so it might of been last night when he did it, but that cannot be healthy to breathe in. It reminded me of a bat cave full of guano, that toxic.
What do you think?

Do you feed him fish is so how often? Also what kind of substrate do you use? Plus how old and size of cage?

Re: Yellow conda with ammonia smelling urates
his cage is 4x2 boaphile, newspaper for substrate, and only eats f/t xl rats usually every two weeks, though if it's a smaller rat, then I'll feed him the next week. He's right at 12lbs, so an xl rat doesn't leave much of a mark on him. He's my only yellow and have noticed he will deficate multiple times, small poos, unlike others boas that will deficate one large poo.

He's 12 lbs, but how long? Never noticed abnormally strong ammonia smell from my yellow but he's definitely got a stronger smell then all my other snakes.

Re: Yellow conda with ammonia smelling urates
He's right at about 6'. He is my first and only anaconda. I've had him since he was tiny, 18" or so, and have noticed he does have a stronger spell than my bci's and pythons, but this last one was heavy.

Re: Yellow conda with ammonia smelling urates
Was it really that much worse then normal? I wouldn't think to deeply into it, I'd keep an eye(or nose) out for if it continues. Any recent changes in husbandry?

Re: Yellow conda with ammonia smelling urates
it did seem out of the ordinary, but could have been an isolated incident. Or maybe it just had that much longer to 'marinate' into the strength that it was. I'll keep an eye out for future urates and see if it continues. Thank you!

Re: Yellow conda with ammonia smelling urates
I use Reptile Bark which seem to help absorb the smell some but i also keep a litter box that i use for a water bowl in the cage at all times. As he gotten older he usually will go in the water which also helps keep the smell down.

Mine also uses his water bowl as a toilet. Very rarely does he do his bussiness elsewhere.
