Stepping it up a notch!!!
It appears as though we will be diving into the world of rear fanged venomous! I have had my heart set on a boiga cyanea (green cat eye) or a b.dendrophila melanota (mangrove) for a while now but have been having an extremely hard time coming across CB. My one contact is going to be breeding her's soon but is borrowing the male from another friend and she is pretty sure she is going to keep her half of the offspring.
That being said, she just had a clutch of 8 Hydronastes Gigas (False Water Cobra) hatch. we are going to be meeting up at the expo to talk a little more. I want to find out a bit more about her and she also would like to know a little more about me. She seems very determined to make sure all her animals go to a proper home (this makes me happy to know that she cares and is not just in it for the money). She also agreed to be part of raising our new little one up. I asked her if we could stay in contact so she could kinda "mentor" me and she was happy about it.
So if everything goes well I will have a new arrival soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The b.cyanea is my favorite...We were going to hold out on getting RFV for one of these guys but since it isn't looking like we will be able to find any, the FWC is a close third...next to the mangrove in second
Although if her breeding project works out this year and she decides to sell some of her half then I will scoop one of them up like there is no tomorrow

Thanks Swany, I hope so too. we are taking our time and not rushing just to be sure that this is the right move. From now until the expo at the end of the month, majority of my time will be spent researching. Once we meet he at the expo I am going to take another week or 2 so that we can be sure and get a baby tank set up and running properly. I also don't mind the idea of her holding on to the little one a little longer just to get another meal or 2 or 3 in

Re: Stepping it up a notch!!!

nom nom

you mean one of these right?
I found some beautiful pics on another forum of this snake, wow. I assume the beauty has its price are they really venomous?
I like the vine snakes but I'm told that unless you want to spend an arm and a leg on anoles you should get into breading anoles first.

Yup I love the green cat eye, that is what i am hoping to get this summer.
The are a rear fanged venomous snake and unfortunately there is very little info on their venom. They have to kinda chew on you to inject the venom. It is best described like bee stings or tarantulas. Some people get a little swollen and red with mild irritation but some people can swell right up and get numbness in fingers or limbs. Because there is so little known about them it is best to not get bitten
I will be getting the False Water cobra, RFV as well. I am not sure the price of the green cat eyes but I am getting the FWC for 200 and change. I believe it is pricey compared to the states but they are difficult to get here, especially captive breed.

If i may make a personal recommendation.. I would avoid b. dendrophila unless you are completely comfortable working with a rather larger defensive snake, with quite a potent venom, but a poor delivery system. I have worked with several species of WC/CB boiga and most shared a common temperament of very defensive snakes. I understand there are some exceptions and obtaining a CB neonate-yearling lessens the chance of a defensive snake. But at the same time i feel you must be comfortable being hands on with venomous snake that may or may not be about to bite you, removing an eye cap to excess shed, even medical needs that may require you to be hands on with a venomous animal.

Thank you very much for that info, I appreciate it. It doesn't look like I will be getting a mangrove any time soon though. I would actually prefer a b.cyanea over any of them but it appears it will be difficult to obtain.
This whole situation is going to work out very well in my favor. The breeder has a couple of both boiga species and 3 adult FWC's. we have arranged that I can come over before purchasing my baby just to be up close and personal with a full grown FWC and be completely sure that this is something that I am ready for.
She is also willing to help me every step of the way to properly get my foot in the door when it comes to rfv. her species are all cb and her mangrove is amazingly tame. Yes of course all snakes have different dispositions but she appears to have an excellent handle on venomous (she does keep other hots as well).
Thank you though for your info, I do appreciate it as it is not too many people (at least around here) with hands on experience. I will keep your recommendation in my mind and please know that I am NOT going to be rushing into anything over my head. If I am having any doubts I do have the will power to put this off until I am ready. Thank you.
