Dealing with smell

Wata the best thing to control the smell. The tank is in the corner of ma living room. Just don't want ma whole living room smelling like the tank

Re: Dealing with smell

Spot clean daily and change the substrate every week. This means, every single day you open up the enclosure and pick up any waste materials.

Re: Dealing with smell

I have 8 snakes and the only time I smell anything other than the substrate itself is when there's waste.

Re: Dealing with smell

A clean ball python and a clean environment don't smell.
I own over 100 snakes and the only thing that still smells in my new hardwood flooring.

I agree with the others. Is there proper ventilation?
If you're using aspen after awhile that can become moldy and gross.

Re: Dealing with smell

We have seven vivs in the living room with us - the only time there is a smell is when there is poo to pick up - once it is gone there is no smell at all

Re: Dealing with smell

hmm I'm no expert and I've never used the substrate that you are using but could it have something to do with moisture? do you mist the tank to keep humidity at the proper levels and could the substrate be getting funky? When you spot clean are you sure that you get everything? Is there anything else in the tank that could smell like branches that are damp?

Re: Dealing with smell

I have heard stories of reptile carpet harboring bacteria if not taken out and washed very regularly?

What is the humidity like with the carpet, does it hold moisture well?

If you just spot cleaned the reptile carpet, then you will still have a smell from the poo and or urates. When i used reptile carpet, i would remove the whole piece, put in a fresh piece, and thoroughly wash the stained piece. It will especially smell right over the heat pad, if that's where the deposits were.
