Breeding question (general)

So when you put your pairs together, how do you do it?? (ie: 1/2 hr at a time, 1 day, 1 week, ect......)

And for those of you who only put them together for short time, do you stand there and wait for a lock??

From the Corn book I have, in the breeding section they only state that the male can service a female about every 2-3 days, So I have been putting the pairs together for 24 hrs at a time, every 3 days. I don't stay to see if there is a lock.

So I'd like to know how YOU GUYS breed your snakes in case I want to change how I am going about it.

Re: Breeding question (general)

Well, in my instance, when i introduced my male normal KSB to my Female Paradox Albino, i literally witnessed courting an hour after i put him in there, and a full on lock probably 12 hours after that. Once they're locked, i do not disturb them until they separate, and the male loses interest. Last year was my first breeding attempt, so if i had not witnessed a lock, i would have separated, offered food, and then put the male back in a few days later.

Re: Breeding question (general)

but you didn't stand there for 12 hrs waiting to witness a lock did you?? It was just chance that you happened to be checking when they were in "lock", right??

I have put my girl with my boy 3 x's now, for a full 24 hrs each time. I have a busy schedule most days, and can't stand there waiting to see the lock!!

Is there a trick to it??

No, you're right, i checked in on them, and right at the moment, i saw the lock. After that, i ran and grabbed my camera to document the moment

I was afraid they were going to be under the aspen, and i wouldn't witness it, but there they were, right on the surface. I did witness it at night, when they're usually active, so you might check then.

Honestly, i do not know, but because their vulnerable when they're in shed, i would wait until he's shed before introducing them, but that's just my opinion

Re: Breeding question (general)

my pair live together all year and there isn't much courting they mostly fight a bit before they lock up so its a week long lock-fest usually with the occasional face biting

Re: Breeding question (general)

your jeweled lacerta`s live together year round?

I have all corns and that is not reccomended for them. so they each have thier own tub and I put the female into the males tub for 24 hrs at a time every 3 days.

Re: Breeding question (general)

I think from what i have read on here that most people put the male into the females viv rather than the other way round.

HMMM, do you think that makes it more likely for them to breed??

I was told that it is regularily done both ways by different people, but the guy I was talking to at the time said he puts female into males pen because she is less likely to be too busy exploring the new environment, whereas HE would be checking out the "new territory" instead of getting on with business!!

I found putting the male in with the female, in her enclosure, works best, he catches her scent, and he knows it's business time, while if the female was put in the males enclosure, she would be the one exploring. again, that is my opinion, and it worked very well for me

Re: Breeding question (general)

alright, I`ll give it a shot!! so far, whenever I peek in (the way I`m doing it now) they are usually cuddled together, but I have not witnessed any locks.

What about the male being in blue? do I wait until he`s shed before putting him in with his female? Or do you think he`ll have a go at her anyways?

Re: Breeding question (general)

I'd say wait til he's shed, so he's in a better mood to get the job done
