Question about feeding hots F/T
My understanding of the snakes use for venom is this
1: defense, strike a threat in the hopes of deterring it/killing it
2: debilitate/kill a prey item to ensure minimal injury to the snake during the feeding process
3: aid in digestion
My question is, when you feed a snake a F/T animal the venom doesn't circulate through the prey items system. Does this negatively affect digestion?
And when you are milking a snake, do you give it time to rebuild the venom prior to the feeding for the same reason?

Re: Question about feeding hots F/T
Your right most venomous snakes use it for all three, for the first some less than others that's why there's dry bites to save there venom for something they know they can eat.
Your first question: They way you wrote it is kind of hard to understand but what i draw from it is, if the venom doesn't circulate through the system then will it be of negative impact. With my Copperhead sometimes he will strike at the thawed mouse then return for it moments later, sometimes he will just grab it and immediately begin eating it. Either way it shouldn't matter the venom will run its course during the digestive phase. Also some snakes that are venomoid (which i dont believe in even though its harmless to the snake) still consume there prey without venom and live normal life's with out venom.
And your second question: Ive never milked a snake for venom, but i know there supply is finite, but you wouldn't need to give the snake much time at all, around 24 hours.
hope this helps.

Re: Question about feeding hots F/T
According to a venomoid site (wont list don't know if it's against rules) Aiding in digestion is a myth and they live fine without it, and in fact don't even know the difference. I don't know how long or at what point digeston is complete, but i've left dead prey in my hots viv and didn't see anything that would suggest aiding in digestion for 3 days. I've never had any experience with milking but I don't see why you'd have to feed right after milking. One or two days should be sufficient, my Norpacs can nock out a few mice one day, and repeat the next day or the following. I don't know how fast the reproduce venom, but from what i've witnessed it's more up to the snake on how much is used. I've had a hot not eat for 2-3 weeks, bit and barely envenomate at all, taking an hour or two for prey to die. Then also seen them eat the day prior and inject enough to kill prey within seconds.
Again just what i've read from a venomoid site, and observed with mine.

even though i dont have venomous snakes or any venomous animals for that matter, i do know a fair emount though, so here goes:
fact is not all hots inject there venom, there are those that spit there venom, primarily they strike to feed and often or not most will do a "false" strike, where the snake will strike but either keeps its mouth closed or there fangs sheathed as there venom will take a good few hours (24hrs for some) to replenish.
take the spitting cobra for example, they have a certain venom glan for spitting and another for injecting (according to austin stevens so i apologize if im wrong) there venom. sorry i thin k ive answered your question lol

Re: Question about feeding hots F/T
What venomoids do you own and where did you purchase them? Can you recommend a trusted source?

no, sorry. i don't recommend anyone own hots or venomoids. these were given to me by someone who could no longer care for them. i did not seek them out and purchase them myself.

Re: Question about feeding hots F/T
Ok. Just curious. Have you ever seen if they still produce venom even though called "venomoids"?

depends on the procedure. some places remove just the venom glands and other places remove the venom glands and the venom ducts. if done improperly, it is possible for a venomoid to start productin venom again.
