cats and snakes
Hi too all just wondered if any 1 has any views on my situation and i would appreciate any replies.
my girlfriend got given 2 kittens before i brought my snake and they stayed in our room most of the time . When i got my red tail i stopped the kittens coming in our room , we have now given 1 of our kittens away so we let the other 1 in our room now but i do not like the thought of the snake being scared of the cat. I would never get the snake out when the cat is in the room . now i just washed my hands like usual and went to take the snake out but she was on edge and smelt me alot more than usual and then what looked like going into strike mode , so i just closed the viv to save confusion.
The problem is every1 else in the house is fed up of the cat and being a house cat (my girlfriends decision) it has to live in our room . Is this gonna cause any problems.
does any1 else have cats go in the same room as your snake and how do they both act ?

Re: cats and snakes
We had cats, dogs and ferrets go in the same room as my snakes. The snakes never even gave them consideration. I think maybe your boa just needs to adjust to the new smells. And good on you not taking the snake out when the cat is around as this could be hazardous.

Re: cats and snakes
We have a cat who is around the snakes quite often and none of the animals pay any attention to each other.

Re: cats and snakes
because the kitten is still young hes so active and as soon as the snake moves hes right up to the viv, i just imagine it would freak the snake out ?

Re: cats and snakes
My cats love the snakes.......the tops of vivs are lovely warm sleeping areas. It is the only place in the house that is heated 24/7!

Re: cats and snakes
Our snakes don't seem bothered by the cats even when they occasionally paw at the glass. Sometimes I swear it looks like they're having a staring contest. The cats seem amused at least. Though I did build a cabinet with sliding shelves so the cats couldn't sit on top of the screen, I'm just paranoid about that.

Re: cats and snakes
Our cat loves to go lounge around one of my scrubs enclosures. The only problem is if i give the scrub a chance she will eat the cat no drama's. The poor cat thinks they are friends and tries to "play" through the glass, but liitle does he know he is only looked at like dinner lol.

Re: cats and snakes
Our cat sits and stares into the vivariums, she also likes to sleep right up tight to the few cages I have with heaters in them.
On the other hand we have a Savannah Monitor Lizard and the cat runs the other way.
Our cat has also provided the excellent service of pointing out the exact hiding locations of three different snake escapes.
Her most important recovery was the female garter snake that just gave me a valuable litter of morphs had escaped about a year ago.
Kitty showed me where the snake was hiding and I made a swift and safe recovery.

Re: cats and snakes
I have 3 indoor cats that sleep in the bedroom, living room or where ever they decide t plop down. They know they can look at the snakes and geckos but not touch. If they try to touch they get "thumped". In other words yelled at and sprayed with vineger water. Works great every time. They do like the enclosures a lot especially the geckos one cause they move around a lot more and it catches their eyes. But I wont let them on the cage cause last year a couple of them singed off hair from the heat lamps lol.

Re: cats and snakes
Marica, is that a Bengal? I have 3 and they are awesome cats!
As for the snakes and cats issue...my Bengals are far too instinctively predators. They mew and carry on and stare if I have a snake out when one is around. When I had an apartment and 1 snake I couldn't keep them completely away from the snake and I never had any problems, but now I have a separate snake room that the cats cannot go into.
You run into problems when the snake is really small and the cats see it as a prey item and try to hunt it. If the snake should get out with a cat in the room, the cat will attack and kill it most likely. It's just instinct. On the flip side, if you have a large snake, like a full-grown boa, Burm, retic or coastal carpet, and it gets out or you are not paying attention when holding it, you could end up with a very dead cat quickly. I personally do not feel it is a good idea to have them around each other, but since there is no way around it in your case, you are doing all you can by not holding the snake when the cat is around. Just make sure you have very good locks on the snake's cage and continue to be vigilant about security and you should be ok.

Re: cats and snakes
My cats are a snake escape alarm system, 3 will camp the reptile room door if there's an escapee inside.
My big old tom, Jack, has the garter tank right next to his cat bed, and seems to "play" with them. He bats at the cage, and they follow his paws around pressing themselves against the sides. I'm try to stop the cat, but the snakes seem to enjoy it, they definitely seek him out.
