Some of it's true, some of it's false.
I am only speaking from my experiences with my snakes so bare that in mind. They do range in behavior from the totally docile to the totally psycho Yes they do have big teeth and pack a mean wallop when they give you a good love bite. I have been able to tone down some of the more extreme tudes in my collection by gentle handling on a regular basis. Being able to read the snakes body language is my first clue that they are done with the interactions and want to be left alone. Respect them and you should be OK. On the other end of the spectrum, I have several that are as tame as a gecko and seem to enjoy the interactions.
Now with all that in mind. After dark all bets are off. They are a nocturnal species and go in the hunt mode at lights out. At that point your hand is simply dinner.
