carpet pyton as a first??
Hey everyone
I'm new to the wonderufl world of herping, and was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers on a good snake. I've done my research and I know that I'm not really that interested in BP's. I was thinking about trying to get my hands on an Iria Jaya, but wasn't too sure if it would be a good "starter snake" if only because I've heard and read various different reactions to them. SOoo yea, any help that you gents/ladies can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. ALl the best.

Re: carpet pyton as a first??
First, welcome to the reptile keeping world.
Secondly, I believe you should keep what you want to keep. You'll enjoy the experience more and give the animal a better life if you truely want it there, instead of just keeping it because you need the experience. A carpet python isn't an entirely bad choice for a beginner snake. If you do your homework, and prepared for the possible finicky feeding, nippy baby, as well as the right husbandry then I say go for it.

Re: carpet pyton as a first??
IJ Carpets are great snakes and as long as you've read the care sheets and can accommodate its needs, I think they'd be a fine starter.
I've got a nice female and am currently looking to add a male.

Re: carpet pyton as a first??
Childrens or Spotteds are good choices for first time Pythons. Mark

Re: carpet pyton as a first??
thanks mark, I've been looking at those as well, just wasn't sure. I guess it may be because I haven't heard too much about Childrens or spotteds. I'll definately look them up though. Was thinking about trying to purchase at the september expo in missassauga.

Re: carpet pyton as a first??
Roy Stockwell just hatched out a bunch of both (threads on RC) & his stock will likely be at that expo via Port Credit Pet Centre (Grant - shows promoter). Mark
