Close call with breeder Cal-Kings DOH!
Well I'm glad I decided to clean when I did today. Seperating the breeders to be fed later tonight. I will leave my breeders together overnight, even for a day or 2. It has been my experience that if Kings are going to try & kill each other they will do it in the first minute. I have had them together with one mate even overnight & then "flip" mates & have them attack them then, but other than that its always been an instant thing. Well today they tried to prove me wrong & my timing was sure lucky. I just happened to have the camera right there so I snapped a couple quick ones as I honestly thought the one, maybe both were already dead. One actually didn't move for a few seconds & was struggling for breath as well. Fortunately they both appear OK except for some minor wounds. Heres what you DON'T want to see when checking your breeders, they both had each other by the face. Whew lucky Mark

Re: Close call with breeder Cal-Kings DOH!
I'll cheat & copy my post from another site...
Was actually super easy to seperate them, didn't even try to bite me or each other. The one was basically almost "passed out" & the other doing the most constricting was pretty weak. Must of been a good fight as there was a nice amount of blood that appeared to come from the male where she must have been biting his belly at first. First thing they both did was straight into their hides. I'll definitely be watching them more closely in the future as obviously there are exceptions to everything, its always a possibility when breeding Kings. Mark

Oops! Either they didn't fancy each other or they had a bit of a lover's tiff.
Seriously though, glad you found them before they could do any serious damage. Worries me as I am hoping to breed Kingsnakes eventually.

This is why I don't keep or try to breed kings and milks haha.
On a serious note, good thing you were there. Lesson learned I guessed.

Re: Close call with breeder Cal-Kings DOH!
Nothing learned that I didn't already know, but if one takes chances there are always risks involved. I have had both these 2 since they were babies (2001 I think). They have been breeding together since 2004, double clutches every year except last year, zero issues. Only lesson to be learned (& I already know this one too) is never trust a snake or better yet always trust a snake to be a snake Cheers Mark
